개화기 이후의 남성 머리양식의 변천과 재현에 관한 연구

Abstract

최근 우리 사회는 사람의 외모를 경쟁력의 한 요소로 인식하는 경향이 많아졌다. 이에 과거 미용을 금기시하였던 많은 남성들이 헤어연출과 피부 관리는 물론이고 심지어 메이크업까지도 관심 갖기에 이르렀다. 남성 전용 미용실과 남성 화장품시장의 급성장은 좋은 일례이며 향후 남성들의 미용의 관심도는 더욱 증대될 것이다. 이에 본 논문은 다음과 같은 목적으로 연구를 하였다. 첫째, 전통적인 두발관을 신분과 부의 표시적 상징성, 효와 결연의 정신적 상징성, 금기(禁忌)와 액막음을 나타내는 주술적 상징성으로 나눠 고찰하였다. 둘째, 개화기에서 광복이후까지 각 시대별로 유행 한 남성 머리양식을 파악하고, 변천에 영향을 준 시대적 요인과 배경을 연구하였다. 이는 머리 양식과 패션의 변천은 사회, 정치, 경제적 상황을 반영하기 때문에 당시의 생활상을 이해하는데 귀중한 자료가 될 것이다. 셋째, 개화기 이후의 남성 머리양식 중 몇 가지 헤어스타일을 재현해서 이를 현대에 반영하고자 하였다. 또한 이·미용에 사용되었던 도구와 기기 및 화장품의 특징과 변천과정을 정리하여 체계화하였다. 연구결과 시대의 배경은 헤어스타일에 많은 영향을 주었으며, 머리길이를 짧게 또는 길게 함으로서 억압과 자유를 표현하고자 했다. 오늘날 세계적인 흐름이 이·미용을 분리하기보다는 통합하고 있으며, 성(姓)의 영역이 모호해져 남녀의 구별이 적어지고, 과학의 발달로 이·미용 기법의 변화주기가 빨라지고 있다. 이에 능동적이고 적극적인 자세로 대처하기 위해서도 정확한 이용사(理容史)와 기술(技術)의 연구는 중요한 문제로 생각되어 진다.|Recently, one’s appearance has been regarded as one of his or her competitive edges in Korean society. A lot of men have become more interested than ever in improving their appearances through hairdo, skin-care, or even makeup, which was viewed as kind of a taboo in the past. As a result, the marketplace for man-only beauty parlors and man’s cosmetics has been growing rapidly. It is likely that men’s interests in their looks will increase all the more. In this study, I examined: (1) the traditional views on hairstyle in terms of representative symbolism reflecting one’s social status and wealth, spiritual symbolism representing filial piety, and superstitious symbolism reflecting taboo and exorcism. (2) man’s hairstyles, which were in fashion during those days from the civilization to the post-liberation from the Japanese imperialism, and historical factors and background that affected men’s hairstyles. Since the transition of hairstyles and fashion reflects the social, political and economic situation, the study on them may serve as an important material to understand lifestyle in those days. (3) some of post-civilization man’s hairstyles in an attempt to reflect them in today’s hairstyles. Besides, I structurized hairdressing tools, devices and cosmetics. The study shows that historical background greatly affects hairstyles and people tend to express their oppression and liberation through the length of their hair. Today’s global trend is that the distinction between barber and hairdresser has become irrelevant; gender barrier between men and women has been tom down; and advance in technology has accelerated the cycle of hairdressing techniques. Therefore, a study on man’s hairstyles is crucial in actively responding to changes in global trend.
