20세기 서구여성의 헤어스타일과 복식 변천에 관한 연구

Abstract

복식은 그 시대를 대변하는 가치와 사고의 시각적인 상징이라 할 수 있다. 이러한 복식은 우리 몸을 둘러싸고 있는 옷감이나 보석 또는 기타 재료에 의해 만들어진 의상은 물론이고 실용적 목적외에도 머리장식, 화장, 문신 등 장식적인 측면을 포함하는 것으로 이는 당시의 사회 문화의 반영이라 할 수 있다. 그러나 최근 들어 의복보다는 변화가 용이하며 자신의 다양한 개성연출이 가능한 헤어에 대한 관심이 더욱 높아 가고 있으며, 복식 문화의 일부분에서 이제는 좀 더 디테일한 실용학문의 한 분야로 그 입지를 굳혀 가고 있고 그것을 증명이라도 하듯, 헤어 분야가 예전에는 의류관련학과의 아주 작은 일부분에 불과했으나 1991년 전문대학과정에 미용관련 학과가 개설되어 2002년 현재 약 70여개 대학에서 헤어, 메이크업을 주축으로 전체적인 의상을 통합해 코디네이션(Coordination)하는 교육과정이 이루어지고 있다. 적은 숫자이지만 그동안 복식과 관련되어 연구되어 온 메이크업에 관한 논문들은 있었지만 헤어에 관한 논문은 그 중요성에 비해 단편적으로 연구되어 왔다. 이에 본 논문에서는 현대라 구분지을 수 있는 20세기의 시대적 배경인 사회 문화적 배경과 예술사조 등이 복식에서는 어떻게 수용되어 발전되었고, 헤어 분야에서는 어떻게 변천되었는지를 고찰하여, 이것을 새로운 패션의 테두리 내에서 헤어스타일의 창조에 기초자료로, 그뿐만 아니라 더 나아가 미용산업과 교육에 미력하지만 도움이 되었으면 하는 것이 이 연구의 목적이다. 연구의 방법으로는 문헌자료인 서양복식사 및 관련서적, 예술사관련서적, 영화관련서적, 패션전문지 및 월간지, 헤어와 메이크업 관련 전문서적, 뷰티관련 사진자료 등을 통해 살펴보았고 이해를 돕기 위해 그림이나 사진자료 등을 첨부하였고 연구의 범위로는 1900년도부터 1999년까지의 서구 여성의 복식과 헤어로 제한하여 고찰해 보았다. 앞에서 연구한 결과를 종합해 보면 헤어스타일은 복식의 일부분으로 그 당시 그 사회의 흐름을 잘 파악하고 반영하는 작지만 중요한 한 문화로서 의복과 같이 대인간의 인상형성 시 중요한 역할을 할 뿐 만 아니라 인간의 사고인 이성, 감성 등의 총체적인 면을 표현하는 미적인 수단임에 주목해야 할 것이며, 또한 단순한 미를 추구하고 표출하는 수단에만 그치는 것이 아니라 자기자신의 만족감, 정신적인 풍족함을 얻을 수 있는 형태와 색채, 질감 등 시각을 포함한 다양한 감각에 호소하는 조형예술인 것이다. 그리고, 서구 여성의 헤어스타일은 20세기 복식사에서 함께 보듯 약 10년을 단위로 약 1960년대까지는 여성적이고 곡선적인 것과 젊고 직선적인 느낌이 거의 주기적으로 약간씩 변형되어 번갈아 유행되면서 뚜렷한 헤어스타일 경향을 구분지어 볼 수 있는 반면, 70년대 이후부터는 서서히 시작된 흐름으로, 과거에 유행했던 경향을 새로운 시대를 지배하는 예술사조 등의 표현기법을 도입하여 다시 여러 각도에서 재조합, 재조명하며, 다양한 대중매체의 발달로 정보화 국제화된 세계속에서 민족의 모호성, 남녀성의 모호성, 인종의 다양성 인정 등의 다원화된 양상이 90년대에는 최고조에 이르게 되었다. 또한 20세기 전반기에는 대체적으로 상위계층이 유행을 선도한 반면, 20세기 후반기에 들어서는 젊은 계층, 하위 계층이 유행을 이끌어 가는 양상으로 신분계급간의 격차 등이 많이 줄어드는 것을 볼 수 있다. 특히 헤어스타일은 신체를 바탕으로 표현된다는 점에서 의복과 더불어 전체적으로 조화된 토탈 코디네이션을 이루는 중요한 부분으로 대중매체의 발달과 정보화로 지구촌 시대가 된 지금, 실용학문으로서 더욱 튼튼한 학문적 기반을 구축하는 연구가 활발히 진행되어야 할 것이다.|Dresses and their ornaments may be visual symbol of values and thoughts, representing the times. Such dresses and ornaments reflect social culture of the times including not only the clothes surrounding our body, jewelry or other materials but also ornamental elements such as hair ornaments, cosmetics and tattoo etc. Recently, however, there has been growing interest in hair, which may be more easily changed or enables you to perform various personalities. A branch of Hairdo consolidates its position as a field of more detailed practical learning in the culture of dresses and ornaments. It used to be a tiny element of clothes-related departments before. In 1991, however, cosmetics-related department began to be installed in junior colleges. As of 2002, there are available curriculum of coordinating overall dresses and ornaments centering on Hair and Make-up in some 70 colleges. There have been a little thesis on Make-up related to dresses and ornaments, but theses on hair have been written partially on the contrary to its significance. This study probes how the background of the social culture and the artistic trend of the 20th Century, which may be defined as the modem times, have been reflected in the dresses and ornaments and how air field has been changed. The purpose of this study is to use the result as basic materials to create hair styles within a limit of new fashion and further make even a little contribution to the cosmetic industry and education. The method of study includes literatures such as the Western costume history and related books, artistic history-related books, film-related books, fashion magazines and monthly magazines, Hair and Make-up books, beauty-related pictures etc. To help understand, pictures are attached. The scope of study is Western women's Hair Style, dresses and ornaments between 1900 and 1999. Generalizing the result of the study, Hair style is part of dresses and ornaments, which reflect the social flow of the times. Attention should be paid to the fact that they are important in image making of a human being just like clothes but also aesthetic means to express overall respects such as reason and emotion of the human being. They are not limited to simple pursuit and/or expression of beauty but they belong to plastic art which appeal to various senses such as shapes, colors and qualitative feeling which may give mental satisfaction and richness. As shown in the 20th Century dresses and ornaments history, hair styles of Western women have changed about every 10 years. Until the 1960's, there were alternating fashions of two; one is womanly and curve, and the other is young and straight with express distinction. Since the 1970's, however, there had been the trends of racial ambiguity, sexual ambiguity etc. in the world by adding new age-dominating artistic trend to the past trends, helped by developed mass media. They culminated in the 1990's. In the first half of the 20th Century, the upper class led fashion while young class and lower class led the fashion in the 2nd half of the 20th Century, with disparity among classes reduced a lot. Particularly, hair style is important part composing of total coordination generally harmonized with clothes in that it is expressed based on the body. Even more positive studies are required to consolidate the scholastic basis as practical learning in this global age of developed mass media and information.
