- Abstract
- Cards have been actively used as a way of communication to ask about someone's health as the modern postal system developed, and they, beyond their function to deliver a message with a drawing and letters, were also equipped with a function of decorative property according to the development of printing media. As a way of communication to express one's heart and sincerity and to deliver love, cards are, for busy people in the modern society, now being replaced by e-cards and e-mails by internet or SMS by a mobile phone thanks to the development of multimedia and information age on the rise. However, it is necessary to devise new ways to utilize cards better because they can lead us to understand their culture and function as an index of printing of their country.
The type of the cards to which the pop-up system is applied provides one of the ways to supplement those problems; it provides visual and emotional delight and increases utilization rate of the cards. Therefore, it can be said that these cards can be, in case of delivering a message to others, used as a more effective way of communication. As for the construction of the pop-up, it unfolds two-dimensional planes and builds the three-dimensional aspect, which is good enough to draw people's attention, and it can make a strong impression to users because the construction is diverse and luxurious. Therefore, these cards are used in wide areas such as DM advertisement, POP advertisement, cards, package design, calendar design, and so on. And it made them regarded as more effective media to deliver information, resulting in more demand in them. However, the reality is that they are thoughtlessly used as a mere way to draw people's curiosity and interest rather than being utilized mainly for users.
This study has figured out the construction which was preferred by users among various pop-up constructions, and has analyzed what factor makes a good impression to users when they are really used, and has tried to contribute to manufacturing effective three-dimensional cards by analyzing users' preference. Therefore, it was able to induce the following results.
First, in case of the preference test using basic constructions, though they had images of the same appearance, the constructions that varied more were preferred by users to the simple and one-dimensional ones. In other words, it was shown that the constructions that needed users to participate directly and the ones that had more delicate expression or movements received better evaluation than simple ones.
Second, as for the preference test using application constructions, the result showed that constructions that changed on plane surface was preferred to ones that became three dimensional, ones that changed automatically was to ones that changed according to the user's participation. Though ability to draw the user's attention was the most important among the three factors of three-dimensional cards for effective communication with users, there was not much difference in the rank of the preferred cards in accordance with ability to draw attention, entertain, and to be unexpected. That is because the other two factors are also effective when users are actually in contact with the cards, though ability to draw attention is thought to be more important.
Besides, a relative preference analysis using an importance calculation matrix showed that high degree of evaluation from the same factors might change into lower evaluation according to the importance of a higher factor or a lower factor.
Third, the summary of these test results showed that the three-dimensional cards, unlike pop-up books, with the construction that changed on plane surface were highly preferred. That is because preference for the pop-up construction is not fixed and may be changed depending on its purposes; we were also able to indirectly understand that preference for pop-up books for children and three-dimensional cards for adults might be changed by their needs.
