- Abstract
- Communication between libraries and users in the university libraries has been processed through the various kinds of channels which have been changed by the development of information technologies. Especially, the communication based on information technology like as e-mail, BBS (Bulletin Board System), SMS(Short Message Services) affects library services in all aspects. The libraries which can collect user demands quickly and easily and reflect them in the library policies consequently improve the quality of information service and move toward user -centered libraries.
The purpose of this thesis is to understand the user demands for library service activities and to analyze acceptancy by reflecting their demands on library activities or policies. Therefore, the ultimate aim is to suggest what the users want and to offer the basic ideas for the better library management.
The study was conducted by analyzing what users demanded on Bulletin Boards in eight Theological Seminary Library Homepages and how there libraries accepted them. Items posted by users can be classified into nine subject categories: 1 ) Book Purchase Requests, 2) General Collections, 3 ) Electronic Collections, 4) Circulations, 5 ) Information Retrieval and Reference Services, 6 ) Users themselves, 7 ) Library Automation Systems, 8) Equipments, and 9 ) Administration.
It was found in the analysis of users' demand that the proportion of items which concern the 'Circulations' is the highest(21.9%), the next is 'Book Purchase Requests'( 16.9%), and the items concerning 'Administration' is followed by 16.4%.
For analyzing acceptancy, the study used only 415 items out of total 579 excepting single questions. The library acceptancy rate to users' demand by nine categories showed that 'Electronic Collections' is the highest of 77.8%, 'Information Retrieval and Reference Services' is the second highest of 76.5%, and 'Book Purchase Requests' is followed by 73.0%. The study also analyzed the types of acceptancy it's results showed that 'Improvement of Services' is the highest(48.5%), 34.5% for an 'Amendment of Regulations,' 11.7% for 'Improvement of Programs' and 5.3% for 'Budget Executions.' In conclusion, the study suggests that the library should raise the current acceptancy rate of 49.6% up to 70-80% which leads to high level of user satisfaction in the university libraries.
