Abstract
ABSTRACT
There is no end to human desire for beauty, and everybody wants to lead a healthy and beautiful life in old age. Human inquiry into beauty has continued since the primitive age, and in today's highly civilized society, beauty refers to the new creation of the body from scientific, artistic, medical and sociological perspectives.
Lately, lots of people pay growing attention to beauty as well as health, and elderly women also have much interest in beauty service as one of the best ways to make their appearance more beautiful, express themselves and build confidence.
In future society, the elderly population is expected to be on the rise, and they are expected to live a more affluent, happier, healthier and more comfortable life and to be increasingly interested in their looks. Usually, people find it necessary to ask help from experts when they get a haircut or perm. In terms of hair coloring, however, a hair-dye is very accessible to anybody, and some people color their own hair for themselves indiscreetly as they think everybody can do it without seeking help from experts. But they don't find it easy to color their hair exactly as they want, and inappropriate hair coloring results in doing fatal damage to hair. Once hair is damaged, it's difficult to recover it.
The purpose of this study was to examine the state of elderly women's hair coloring and their satisfaction level with it in the beauty industry in an attempt to provide some information on how to step up the development of the elderly beauty industry, part of the elderly market.
Hairstylists should provide elderly people with customized beauty service to raise their satisfaction level to accelerate the development of the elderly beauty industry, instead of merely focusing on the younger generations, in order to stay abreast with current trends. This study has the following limitations since hairdressers and elderly customers weren't aware of the necessity of such customized service:
First, the subjects in this study were primarily selected from Dongjak- gu and Yangcheon-gu in Seoul and from North Jeolla Province, and the findings might not be generalizable.
Second, given the characteristics of this study, just elderly women were examined, and the findings might not be generalizable, either, since the number of men who use beauty service is on the increase.
Based on the findings of the study, there are some suggestions on future research efforts:
First, the demographic characteristics of the elderly population should be grasped to offer appropriate service tailored to their characteristics to let them lead a better life in old age.
Second, the development of beauty welfare programs tailored to local characteristics is required, and it's needed to take some actions to successfully deal with older people who color their own hair at home, as they have a stronger tendency to color their own hair for themselves.
Third, the psychological traits of the elderly should be utilized properly to boost their satisfaction level.
Fourth, beauty welfare experts who are qualified to take care of elderly customers in light of their characteristics should be nurtured to extend the scope of beauty service to keep up with aging society.
