The purpose of this study was to review the curriculum for the department of makeup art of the 2-year college and thereupon, survey the college students for their understanding of and satisfaction with the curriculum, and then, conduct a field survey to understand the needs of the businesses to determine the basic directions and reform measures for the curriculum and therewith, provide for some basic data useful to development of the curriculum for the department of makeup art of the 2-year college of arts.
For this study, the researcher conducted literature review and empirical analysis in parallel. The results of this study can be summarized as follows, together with its suggestions.
First of all, the results of the empirical analysis can be summed up as follows;
First, the makeup art major students' satisfaction with the curriculum scored 3.09 on average, higher than normal, while their perception of the appropriateness of the curriculum in terms of number of the subjects scored lower or 2.46 on average. And it was found that practical and technical education useful to the actual business were perceived most important, which suggests that practical and technical education is essential. Second, students perceived that the proper ratio between theoretical and practical education would be 40% vs. 60%, and that manners and service (personality) subjects would be most important among the subjects of the beauty art curriculum. Third, the results of the field survey showed that the most important standard for recruitment would be professionalism and that the most preferred academic background would be 2-year colleges. Fourth, it was found that the beauty art businesses wanted manners and service education to be reinforced.
Next, the results of the survey for the make-up major students can be summed up as follows;
First, the major practice was perceived most difficult among the subjects of the beauty art curriculum, while students' satisfaction with the curriculum scored 3.42 on average. Second, students' satisfaction with the practical courses scored low or 2.70 on average, because the contents of the practical courses were perceived too difficult. Third, students' practical competence scored 3.12 on average, while the subject they wanted to be reinstated most was personal color. In view of the major subjects, students perceived that manners and service (personality) education would be most important and essential. Fifth, students preferred wedding shops for their field practice, and most of them wanted to advance to or be enrolled at higher educational institutes or study abroad after their graduation.
Based on the above findings, the researcher put forwards the reform measures for development of the makeup art curriculum of 2-year colleges as follows;
First, it is necessary to conduct an in-depth analysis of and a systematic research into operation of the makeup art curriculum. In particular, such analysis or research should focus on the practical and applicable makeup art curriculum in tune with the time. To this end, it is required to develop a scientific and efficient curriculum consisting of practical subjects for the education responding rapidly to changing requirements for professionalism of markup art. Second, it is essential to add the subjects of service, human relationship and business management to the subjects of the curriculum, while adding personal color as option, to increase the opportunities for the students to learn about makeup art intensively. Third, it is necessary to activate the cooperation between academy and industry. Fourth, the license system and post-graduation career counseling need to be reformed.
This study may be limited in that it sampled 2-year colleges operating beauty art and makeup art curriculum in Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions only. Hence, the results of this study may not well be generalized to other colleges. So, it is hoped that this study will be followed up by future studies which will surmount such limits of this study.
