- Abstract
- With the rapid development of the digital economy and the expansion of non-face-to-face consumption, live commerce has become one of the major retail channels in China, particularly in the beauty market. Advances in mobile technology and changes in platform environments have transformed live commerce from a simple sales channel into an integrated consumption space that combines content, communication, and commerce. Although previous studies have examined various aspects of live commerce, most have focused on platform characteristics or consumer motivations. Consequently, live commerce has attracted considerable research attention. However, existing studies have largely focused on platform characteristics or consumer motivations, making it difficult to comprehensively explain how consumer behavior is formed by considering influencer characteristics, consumer satisfaction, and their structural relationships. While some studies have separately examined the effects of platform characteristics and influencer characteristics on purchase intention, relatively few have simultaneously investigated the structural relationships and influence pathways among these variables. Therefore, there is a need to move beyond examining simple causal relationships and to explore the mechanisms through which these variables interact to shape consumer behavior.
Accordingly, this study aimed to examine the effects of live commerce service characteristics and beauty influencer characteristics on purchase satisfaction and repurchase intention among Chinese beauty live commerce users and to verify the mediating effect of purchase satisfaction. For this purpose, live commerce service characteristics and influencer characteristics were treated as independent variables, purchase satisfaction as the mediating variable, and repurchase intention as the dependent variable. In addition to examining the direct and indirect effects of these variables, the study sought to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms underlying consumer behavior in the Chinese beauty live commerce environment. Live commerce service characteristics were classified into convenience, entertainment, and interactivity, while beauty influencer characteristics consisted of expertise, trustworthiness, and attractiveness. Purchase satisfaction was used as the mediating variable and repurchase intention as the dependent variable to examine both the direct effects of live commerce service characteristics and beauty influencer characteristics on purchase satisfaction and repurchase intention, as well as the mediating effect of purchase satisfaction.
An online questionnaire survey was conducted with 680 Chinese consumers who had used beauty live commerce platforms. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 29.0 and AMOS 29.0 through frequency analysis, reliability analysis, exploratory factor analysis, correlation analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and structural equation modeling. Bootstrapping analysis was also performed to verify the mediating effect of purchase satisfaction. The findings are as follows:
Live commerce service characteristics had a statistically significant positive effect on purchase satisfaction but did not have a significant direct effect on repurchase intention. This suggests that although the quality and features of live commerce services contribute to consumers' immediate purchase satisfaction, they do not necessarily lead directly to repeat purchasing behavior. In contrast, beauty influencer characteristics had statistically significant positive effects on both purchase satisfaction and repurchase intention. These findings suggest that the trustworthiness, expertise, and presentation style of influencers play important roles in shaping consumers' evaluations and purchasing behavior. In addition, purchase satisfaction had a statistically significant positive effect on repurchase intention, confirming that the general pattern of consumer behavior, in which positive purchase experiences lead to repeat purchasing, also applies in the live commerce environment.
The mediation analysis further showed that purchase satisfaction significantly mediated the relationship between beauty influencer characteristics and repurchase intention, whereas the mediating effect between live commerce service characteristics and repurchase intention was not statistically significant. These findings indicate that, even when the same mediating variable is considered, the structural relationships among variables may differ. They also suggest that beauty influencer characteristics play a more central role than service characteristics in shaping consumer behavior.
Overall, both live commerce service characteristics and beauty influencer characteristics significantly influenced purchase satisfaction, while purchase satisfaction significantly affected repurchase intention. However, the mediating effect of purchase satisfaction was significant only in the relationship between beauty influencer characteristics and repurchase intention. These findings provide a better understanding of consumer behavior in the Chinese beauty live commerce market and offer practical implications for the development of effective live commerce marketing strategies.
This study has several academic and practical implications: First, it extends the scope of existing research by comprehensively examining the structural relationships among live commerce service characteristics, beauty influencer characteristics, purchase satisfaction, and repurchase intention in the Chinese beauty live commerce environment. Second, it empirically demonstrates the differing effects of live commerce service characteristics and beauty influencer characteristics on consumer behavior. Third, by confirming that purchase satisfaction serves as a mediating mechanism between beauty influencer characteristics and repurchase intention, the study provides a clearer explanation of how consumer behavior is formed. Fourth, the findings suggest that businesses operating in the Chinese beauty live commerce market should strengthen influencers' expertise, trustworthiness, and attractiveness to encourage repurchase, while live commerce platforms should enhance consumer satisfaction and continued engagement by promoting interaction and providing reliable, high-quality content.
Future research should incorporate additional antecedent variables, such as product attributes and brand characteristics, and conduct comparative studies across different live commerce platforms in China. Furthermore, comparing consumer behavior between live commerce platforms and conventional online shopping malls would provide a more comprehensive understanding of consumer behavior in China's digital marketplace.|디지털 경제의 발전과 비대면 소비의 확산으로 중국 라이브커머스는 주요한 유통 채널로 자리 잡았으며, 특히 뷰티 시장에서 중요한 소비 환경으로 발전하였다.
