Abstract

As science and industry develop rapidly and industrialization and ulbanization spread through the society, the problems of environmental polution were on the rise and the recurrent phenomena for the past and nature was emphasized. Retrospective trend happened to fashion in late 20th century also and the costumes of the past were applied and revived. This thesis analyzed the types and the formative feature characteristics of domestic retrospective fashion. The fashion photographs from "Yeosung - Donga" and Korean "Elle" were used to analyze the domestic fashion in 1990s. The major conclusions of the study are as follows : 1. The types of domestic retro fashion were historicism, ecology, ethnic, 20th century fashion. Retro fashion was expressed through applying and reappearing silhouette, detail, fabric and image of the costumes of the past. 2. Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo styles were mainly applied in domestic fashion and Baroque, Rococo and Bustle styles were applied much in foreign fashion. The costumes of 1960s and 1970s were applied much in both retro fashion. 3. Orientalism was emphasized and Korean traditional styles and Chinese costumes were expressed mainly in domestic fashion. But Japanese styles were reappeared much in foreign fashion. Fashion trend recurrent and intimate to the nature appeared in both retro fashion through patterns of the nature, natural fabrics, natural and comfortable silhouette and natural dying. 4. The formative feature characteristics of domestic retro fashion were recurrence, purity, tradition and decoration. As retro fashion applies costumes of the past newly, it supplies unlimited possibilities to the present fashion which seeks versatility.
