국내대형서점 내의 아동서적 공간 현황에 관한 연구
- Abstract
- A corporation, one constituent of society, exists for making not only personal profit but also satisfaction of public social needs. It is because corporations have social responsibility for public welfares. The social needs should be satisfied without age, sexual, and disability discriminations, what is more, children should be taken a serious care of. The interior design studies about the children facility and space have been greatly progressed. In contrast there were only little reports or data for especially great bookstores' children section. It thus needs to derive the concept, to make the criteria, and to propose the progressive base data for retail bookstores related with children.
The study is performed by research of current six domestic great bookstores, two branches of each three large corporations, larger than 2,500py in Seoul city.
Murtha's User Benefit Criteria is applied by means of base to research the sites. The Murtha's Criteria has a concept that environment should support users in other words what user benefit from the environment they use, and is composed of four factors;
behavioral facilitation that support unhindered behavior, physiological maintenance related with healthcare, Perceptual maintenance meant to psychological comfort, and social facilitation which helps proper social interaction. Each of four factors have sub contents based on previous studies and professional data, and appraisal standards are listed to evaluate current site condition. In addition survey about current condition, their satisfaction, and ideal concept on the subject had been accomplished by parents and teachers.
As a result of research, most of great bookstores have not reasonable behavioral facilitation such as insufficient space, inadequate width of corridor, height of furniture. Also it is proved not to support physiological maintenance like inadequate finishes and absence of sanitary facilities etc. In perceptual maintenance case, light fixtures were not properly maintained, and discomfort vision, inadequate furniture and finish colors were founded. There were such negative facts also in a view of social facilitation. For example, most of books and/or goods are not organized, so it does not provide sufficient corridors, and prohibit visual field. There were some places planned with visual landmark for children otherwise not.
In survey the parents answered they use great bookstores at least one or two times a month with their children for reading habit of their children and themselves, and they pointed out "behavioral facilitation"as the most important aspect for the specific children's section. Half of researched bookstores result in unsatisfaction of 50% or less because of behavioral facilitation and physiological maintenance issues. As are sult of second survey by children specialists, they answered it needs to be studied about facilities and spaces for children's reading, and to advance current situation. The answered current problem is on a matter of policy of great bookstores which is focussed only in retail business even though reading environment affects children to have good reading habit and behavior, and sociality.
Detailed and objective investigation of great bookstores in Seoul city are proved of having so many problems. It can be summarized as following:
Firstly, informants are conscious that physical environmental factor is the most important. For example, whole area should be carefully considered in appropriate distribution, keep minimum dimensions for corridors according to number of users, and be selected furniture with a children's size. Pursuing business profits needs to be second purpose in case of supporting the physical facilities. Designers should be challenge and have ability for this change.
Second reason of unsatisfaction was in a view of physiological maintenance. They are selecting not considered finishes, sanitary facilities, and discomfort glare from lighting, etc. They can be advanced by replacing with non-slippery rubber matt, and sustainable finishes for children's behavior, and providing nursery room for parents with their baby. Technical lighting planning also need to prevent any discomfort glare by using translucent cover, selecting anti-glare lighting method, or aiming right direction.
Thirdly, children specialists are pointed out perceptual maintenance is important as much as behavioral facilitation, but actual situation was not suitable. Most lighting condition in children section are properlys elected in light source with more than 80 in color rendering and less than 5,300K in color temperature, but does not meet ideal illuminance uniformity which is inadequate visual environment for children. Forilluminance uniformity designer should calculate illuminance level with distribution curve of light fixture and reflectance of finishes. Furniture with warm pastel color scheme considered with children's taste are also important to make learning circumstance. This meets one of the survey, reason of using great bookstores.
Fourthly, some bookstores put on interesting products very inattentively, so sections become vague, and corridors become narrow to cause discomfort. Children might cowered if they do not recognize a space correctly especially in small area. It might affect children to be negative in society. Furthermore absence of concentrated factors make children not to be aware of space properly, thus not to support social activity. For this social support, easily recognised feature such as character, graphic, animation can be applied, and these should be planned systematically with main design concept, color scheme, andsign planning.
