20세기 헐리우드 영화 속의 특수 효과에 나타난 특수 분장에 관한 연구

Abstract

특수 효과 (Special Effects)기술이란 영화의 시지각적 만족을 높여주는 기술을 말한다. 영화촬영을 위한 막대한 비용의 세트제작이나, 현실적으로 존재하지 않는 상상속의 캐릭터를 가시적으로 보여 주고자 할 때 특수 효과는 적은 비용으로 이러한 문제점들을 해결할 수 있는 효과적인 방법이다. 이처럼 잘 만들어진 특수 효과는 관객이 영화 속에 몰입할 수 있도록 도와 주는 장치이기도 하다. 영화에서 최초로 특수 효과를 사용했던 조르쥬 멜리에스(Georges Melies)의 <달나라 여행 A Trip to the Moon (1902)>이후 특수 효과는 지속적인 발전을 거듭해 왔다. 특히 1977년의 조지 루카스(George Lucas) 감독의 <스타워즈 Star Wars(1977)>는 특수 효과 기술에 컴퓨터 그래픽을 도입하면서 이전의 영화와는 전혀 다른 놀라운 영상을 만들어 내기에 이른다. <스타워즈> 이후 급속히 발달한 특수 효과 분야에 많은 관심과 인력이 집중적으로 형성되기 시작하였고, 상대적으로 표현 기술을 극대화하기 위한 다각적인 모색이 시도되었다. 본 연구는 이처럼 미래 영상산업의 총아로 떠오르고 있는 특수 효과의 기술적인 측면을 헐리우드의 대표적인 SF 영화들을 중심으로 살펴보고, 특히 특수 효과 안에서도 특수 분장과 컴퓨터 그래픽의 접목이 영화의 완성도에 어떻게 기여하고 있는지를 <에일리언 Alien>시리즈를 통해 분석해 보았다. 과학 기술의 급진적인 발전은 영상에서 사용되어지는 특수 효과와 분장(Special Make Up)의 기술적인 발전에도 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 특히 컴퓨터 그래픽과 디지털 영상 이미지 처리 기술(Digital Graphics)은 영상 제작 기술 중 커다란 부분을 차지할 것이며, 미래의 영상산업은 이 분야에 막대한 투자를 할 것으로 예견된다. 그러나 정교한 실사 작업이 없이는 아무리 고난이도의 디지털 그래픽 기술을 사용한다 하더라도 시각적인 면에서 완벽해 질 수 없다. 따라서 특수 효과와 분장기술에 보다 많은 투자가 따라야 할 것이며, 이것은 한국 영화에서도 예외가 될 수 없다. 상상 속의 이미지들을 표현해 내거나 가공할 캐릭터를 만들어야 할 때 특수 효과와 특수 분장의 역할은 더욱더 커질 수밖에 없는 현실이다. 본 연구는 상업적으로 크게 성공한 헐리우드 영화의 특수 효과와 분장을 사례분석하면서 미래의 영상산업에는 현재 보다 더 큰 비중으로 특수 효과와 분장이 자리 잡을 것이라고 확신하게 되었다. 따라서 한국 영화산업에서도 시각효과를 향상시키기 위한 방안으로 특수 효과와 분장 디자인 인력의 배양에 보다 많은 투자를 아끼지 말아야 하며 이와 더불어 양질의 교육과 정책적인 투자가 이루어져야 할 것이다.|Special Effects means technology enhances visual satisfaction of movies. Special Effects is effective methods when you want to save cost of set building and to make imaginary character visible. And well-fixed Special Effects is a device which will help audience to be absorbed to a movie. Special Effects has developed after the fist movie which had adopted special effects named 「A trip to the Moon, 1902」 by Georges Melies. Especially, 'Star Wars : Episode Ⅳ - A New Hope, 1977」 by George Lucas had showed totally different images to audience as they introduce computer graphics to a movie. After 'Star Wars」, People have showed great interests on the rapidly developed Special Effects Area. And various attempts have tried to magnify this technology. This study speculate technical aspects of Special Effects which rise to the future film industry's pivot focusing on the representative SF Movies and How Combining Special Make-up and Computer Graphic contributed to the degree of completion of movies. Drastic development of Scientific Technology influences technical development of Special Effects and Special Make-up. Especially Computer graphic and Digital Graphics will occupy great part in this area, future film industries will invest enormous capital to Computer graphic and Digital Graphics . But without elaborate photographing process, Digital Graphic can't be perfect in visual aspect. So More Investment will be followed to the area of Special Effects and Special Make-up this is not the exception to Korea. In the future, the roll of Special Effects and Special Make up will grow bigger and bigger. This study analyse case of successful Hollywood movies' Special Effects and Make-Up and find Special Effects and Make-Up will take very important roll in future film industries more. Accordingly, much more capital should be invested to foster men to be competent in this area and simultaneously good education and political investment should be followed.
