현대 소비사회의 욕망 표현 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 2014년부터 2015년까지의 본인의 작업을 중심으로 현대 소비사회의 욕망 표현을 연구한 작품론이다. 본인의 작업은 현대사회에서 잠재된 욕망의 표출로써 상품이 지닌 특성에 주목하면서 시작되었다. 근대사회의 발전은 자본주의 경제를 확립시켰고 자본주의 사회는 소비를 통해 인간의 욕망을 증폭시켰다. 현대사회에서 소비는 인간이 욕망을 표출하는 수단으로써 자기 과시의 수단이 되기도 하고 나아가 자신의 정체성을 드러내기도 한다. 이처럼 소비에 의해 특정되는 사회를 소비사회라고 한다. 소비사회에서 소비는 단순히 생리적인 욕망을 충족시키는 의미를 넘어 하나의 문화이자 상징적 현상이 되었다. 욕망은 우리에게 존재감을 느끼게 하는 근원적 요소 중 하나이다. 이는 무언가를 탐한다는 일반적 의미를 넘어 자본주의 사회를 유지하는 원동력이 되고 있다. 욕망의 대상은 그것을 획득하거나 충족시켰을 때 즐거움과 쾌락을 주지만 그 만족감은 제한적이며 한시적이다. 따라서 그에 따른 좌절감과 불안감이 존재한다. 본인은 물질적인 욕망을 반영하는 자동차 번호판과 타로카드의 상징을 통해서 현대인의 끊임없는 욕망을 투사시키고자 하였다. 본인은 먼저 동양회화와 서양회화에 나타난 욕망의 표현을 연구하였다. 동양회화의 기명절지화는 선비들의 생활공간에 밀접한 사물을 수평적 화면 안에 나열시킨다. 이러한 소재들은 주로 부귀, 평안, 복, 장수 등을 기원하며 당시 사람들의 세속적 욕망을 반영하고 있다. 반면에 서양회화의 바니타스(Vanitas)는 소재로 쓰인 해골이나 뼈, 거울, 엎어진 유리잔 등은 상징물의 조화를 통해 인생의 무상함과 욕망의 허망함을 깨닫게 한다. 현대 회화에서 살펴보면, 1960년대 매스미디어(Mass Media)의 발달로 광고, 만화, 영화, 음악 등 다양한 대중문화가 양산되었다. 팝아트는 대중매체의 기술발달과 더불어 심화되는 소비주의 세태를 담아낸다. 상품이란 소재를 욕망의 대상으로 보고 예술과 상품의 경계를 없애는 역할을 하였다. 대표적으로 산업사회의 현실을 예술 속에 적극적으로 수용한 앤디워홀의 작품을 살펴보았다. 본인은 현대 소비사회의 욕망에 대한 표상을 자동차 번호판 시리즈와 타로카드 시리즈로 나타내고자 하였다. 고가의 사치품을 소비함으로써 심리적 만족감과 과시욕을 충족시키는 현대인의 상징으로 자동차를 선택했고, 이를 상징하는 번호판을 작품의 소재로 삼았다. 또한 이러한 과시적 소비는 타인에게 상대적 박탈감을 유발시키기도 한다. 좌절된 욕망에 대한 상실감과 불안을 해소하기 위한 하나의 방편이 타로카드다. 타로카드 시리즈는 불확실한 미래에 대한 불안과 기대의 심리를 채워주는 욕망의 다른 모습이라 할 수 있다. 이처럼 현대사회에 이르기까지 회화에서 욕망은 동양과 서양에서 서로 다르게 표출되었으며 기명절지와 바니타스, 팝아트에 이르기까지 다양한 상징과 기호로 재구성되어왔다. 본 연구는 전통회화와 현대회화에서 미학적 근거를 살펴보고, 본인의 작품을 통해 주제의 표현과 소재의 선택, 재료기법의 활동 등 창작활동의 실제에 대해 고찰함으로써 작업에 타당한 근거를 정리할 수 있는 기회가 되었고 앞으로의 작업에 토대가 되길 기대한다. | This thesis is a theory of work on the expression of desire observed in a consumer society based on own works from 2014 to 2015. My study was initiated from an attention to the characteristic of goods as an expression of latent desire in modern consumer society. A development of modern society established the capitalistic economy that boosted human desire through consumption. The consumption in this era is a method of self-identification and self-display by the expression of human desire. We call this society that is characterized by consumption as a consumer society. In the society, consumption is no longer a simple fulfillment of physiological desire but a cultural and symbolic tendency. A desire is a fundamental source that makes us realize a sense of existence. Further from general meaning of wants, a desire becomes the impetus of modern society. Although an accomplishment of desire brings us a joyfulness and a satisfaction, the fulfillment is restricted and temporal. Thus, a frustration and a despair exist. Through the symbolism of tarot card and car plate which represent material needs, I tried to trace endless human desire. I have initially explored the desire from both oriental arts and western paintings. Gimyeongjeolji paintings, one of oriental arts, lists objects close to people's life space on horizontal canvas. The sources of paintings represent their prosaic desire wishing wealthy, comfort, luck, and long life. In opposite, Vanitas, one of western arts, show the frailty of human life and the vanity of desire through the balance of symbolic source such as skull, bones, mirror, and a glass upside down. Observed from modern paintings, development of mass media in 1960’s produced pop culture such as ads, comics, and movies. pop art reflects the tendency of consumerism enhanced with development of mass medea. Considering the material as the target of desire, merchandise goods have a role of diminishing the boundary between art and goods. I studied Andy Warhol’s works that admitted the reality of consumer society into his arts. I tried to present the symbol of modern consumer society as a car plate series and tarot card series. I chose the vehicles as a symbol of people who find their sense of self-display and satisfaction from consumption of luxury item, and took car plates as my source of artworks. Conspicuous consumption causes relative deprivation. Tarot card is a method to solve the sense of loss and nerve caused by frustrated desires. Tarot card is reflection of desire that fulfills nerve and expectation to the uncertain future. Until recent, desire in paintings have been expressed differently in eastern and western arts, and reconstructed as various symbols and signs as Gimyeongjeolji paintings, Vanitas, and pop arts. This study provided a chance to build a basis for my artworks by exploring aesthetic evidence from traditional and modern paintings, and considering the reality of creative arts from material selection to the expression of material and inflection of material technics. With this, I expect this study becomes a foundation of my future works.
