Abstract
This study is intended to contemplate historical backgrounds of France in 18^(th) Century where the peak of Make-up and its disharmony co exited, and that of Korea where the opposite concept of Make-up was presented in pursuit of temperance. It also is to identify the correlation between two countries and the links between the past and the present in terms of Make-up.
It is not accurate since when the concept, 'Make-up' has been used either in the Eastern or in Western, but it has developed tremendously for thousands of years for the purpose of not only Make-up but also for many other uses.
The field of beauty has become broader as time went by, and it still is quite difficult to break down. There are many reasons and causes behind appearance and changes of new fields of beauty. In the past, the beauty trend showed different aspects depending on countries and centuries. However, nowadays, the trend raises the standards and shares a lot through the cultural exchange between the East and the West. Therefore, it is important to analyze the field of Make-up for both countries in modern ages where Make-up is much in trend.
This study is also intended to point out the social causes and psychological expressions of Make-up. On top of it, I wanted to analyze the culture of the Make-up at that time by looking into Make-up techincs, cosmetics, cosmetic tools, and etc. As a result, the following conclusion was made : Make-up in the Chosun dynasty showed differences according to social positions, especially in makeup trends of upper class women. This research was focused on skin care rather than the color tones. That is because temperate ideologies and cultures prevailed in the dynasty. It affected the Make-up style and its freedom of expression was suppressed. Since nature adjusted lifestyles dominated at that time, most of cosmetics materials came from the nature. On the other hand, French women had strong desires towards expressing and making themselves up, due to the social atmosphere that permitted freedom of expression and pursued pleasure. Accordingly, it was excessively splendid and indiscreet, and artificial colors and materials were frequently used.
Atmospheres of each age affected the field of Make-up, which was one of the ways women expressed themselves. Accordingly, the development of cosmetics, cosmetic tools, and ornaments were closely followed that of the Make-up by the degree of the expressions. In the 18^(th) century, a few trends or types led the major streams, and specific Make-up cultures prevailed whereas different kinds of Make-up trends exist nowadays.
