Abstract
In terms of development, the juvenile period is a very important period when the direction of the adult life should be determined. In other words, the juvenile life is highly correlated with the adult life. We need to be reminded that most of the remarkable achievements have been conceived during leisure time than working time, which suggests that the leisure is very important for juveniles. Leisure activities help the juveniles to grow up into men or women of whole personality and balanced sense
With such basic conceptions in mind, this study was aimed at reviewing the conditions and patterns of juveniles' leisure activities and thereupon, surveying how they would feel about the leisure activities and their impedements as well as about their solutions, and thereby, providing for some basic data useful to creation of a desirable leisure culture for juveniles.
To this end, 384 second-grade male and female students were sampled from 3 grammar schools and 3 technical high schools located in Jecheon-si to be subject to a questionnaire survey. The questionnaire was designed in reference to preceding studies.
The collected data were processed using the SAS (Statistical Analysis System) for frequency analysis and then, cross analysis to test the independence and association.
The results of this study can be summarized as follows;
First, many juveniles rely on computer, TV or other electroruc wave media for their leisure activities. They tend to play with friends or alone at home or PC rooms for 1 ∼ 2 hours during weekdays and for more than 4 hours during weekends. In short, their major leisure activities involve computer, friends and TV. The leisure activity desired most by them is travel, followed by film or drama, outdoor activity and sports in their order. This finding suggests that our juveniles have a positive view of leisure activities and therefore, that it is necessary to provide them with more leisure activities.
Second, the majority of the sample students feel necessary for leisure activities, and perceived that leisure activities are very useful to their ordinary life. However, to the question "what is leisure", most of the students answered that 'it is idle', 'it is pastime or travel' or 'it relieves them of stress'.
Third, as a result of surveying the obstacles to leisure activities and their solutions, it was found that the obstacles were lack of time, poor leisure facilities and inexperience of leisure activities. In addition, they wanted to have a cultural street devoted to them, and wanted their parents to understand and support their leisure activities. Moreover, they wanted their schools to expand time and facilities for their leisur activities, and they hoped that the society would create a desirable environment including facilities and places for their leisure activities.
Based on the above findings, the following suggestions are put forwards;
First, in order to improve the life quality through education, it is necessary to educate our students on a systematic leisure activity, by using the electronic wave media available to them.
Next, it is essential to secure sufficient time for leisure and arrange leisure facilities or special spaces nearby, so that our students can be protected from the harmful environment, living a better life at home, school and in the society.
