융합특허가 경영성과와 기업가치에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구

Abstract

In the recent fourth industrial revolution era, it is essential for the technology innovation leaders such as corporations and government to discover new growth engines that can instill new energy in major industries and to cope with rapid changes of business environments caused by the phenomena of integrating various and innovative technologies with industries complicatedly in order to satisfy new demands of consumers. Since early 2000s, when the demand for innovative technologies started seriously, there have been a variety of discussions on convergence domestically and internationally, and the convergence trend has been gradually spreading to technical development, product·service development and new industry promotion. Currently, the convergence is a core keyword that gathers attention in the technology innovation paradigm and is recognized as an extensive phenomenon that can have an overall effect on business activities and industrial ecosystem changes. This study is intended to research the practical significances of efforts through securing and utilizing convergence patents, which are the processes and results of business mergers between technologies and industries, in the perspectives of management performance and corporate value, along with characteristics according to industrial characters and business types and implications. For the study, 10 years of convergence patents, management performances and corporate value from 2008 to 2017 were traced on 544 listed firms and KOSDAQ registered firms of machine, automobile, metal, chemical, medicine, rubber and electrical · electronic · computer industry, which are representative industrial fields in the patent application and registration among manufacturing businesses according to Korea Standard Industry Classification(KSIC). The results shows that convergence patents have a positive(+) effect on both the rate of sales increase and the rate of Tobin's Q. The increase rate of homologous·heterogeneous convergence patents has a positive(+) effect on both the rate of sales increase and the rate of Tobin's Q. Regarding the relation verification according to industrial characters, there is an influence on the relation between the increase rate of homologous·heterogeneous convergence patents and the sales increase rate, and the relation between the increase rate of heterogeneous convergence patents and Tobin's Q increase rate in the machine industry field that includes machine · automobile · metal fields. There is an influence on the relation between the increase rate of heterogeneous convergence patents and the sales increase rate, and the relation between the increase rate of homologous·heterogeneous convergence patents and Tobin's Q increase rate in the chemical industry field that includes chemical · medicine · rubber fields. There is an influence on the relation between the increase rate of homologous·heterogeneous convergence patents and the sales increase rate, and the relation between the increase rate of heterogeneous convergence patents and Tobin's Q increase rate in the electronic industry field that includes electrical · electronic · computer fields. Lastly, regarding the difference verification per business type, the increase rate of homologous·heterogeneous convergence patents has a positive(+) effect on both the sales increase rate and Tobin's Q increase rate in KOSDAQ registered firms rather than in listed firms. This study is meaningful in that it empirically analyzes factors that affect the recent management performance and corporate value based on convergence patents while most of precedent studies recognize the convergence as a conceptual form. This study will have significance as a basic resource that can be utilized for the technical innovation and the establishment of growth strategies of many innovative leaders such as corporations and government in the current situation when the convergence environment is considered as a universal phenomenon for technical innovation. | 최근 4차 산업혁명의 시대를 맞아 기업과 정부 등 기술혁신의 주체들은 주요 산업에 새로운 에너지를 불어넣을 신 성장 동력을 발굴하고 소비자들의 새로운 수요를 만족시키기 위해 다양하고 혁신적인 기술과 산업이 복잡하게 융합하며 발전하는 현상과 이로 인한 비즈니스 환경의 급격한 변화에 대응하는 것이 필수적이다. 혁신적 기술에 대한 수요가 본격적으로 나타난 2000년대 초반부터 국내외에서 융합에 대한 다양한 논의가 있었고 점차 기술개발, 제품 · 서비스 개발, 신산업 육성 등으로 확산되고 있으며, 현재 융합 현상은 기술혁신 패러다임에서 주목받는 핵심적인 키워드로서 비즈니스 활동과 산업 생태계 변화에 걸쳐 전반적으로 영향을 미칠 수 있는 광범위한 현상으로 인식되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 기술간 · 산업간 융합이 활발하게 진행 중인 기업들의 융합의 과정이자 결과물인 융합특허의 확보와 활용을 통한 노력들이 기업들의 경영성과와 기업가치 측면에서 어떠한 실질적인 의미를 가지며 산업특성 및 기업유형별로 나타나는 특성과 시사점을 살펴보고자 하였다. 연구를 위해 한국표준산업분류(KSIC)에 따른 제조업 중 특허출원 및 등록 측면에서의 대표적인 산업 분야인 기계․자동차․금속산업, 화학 · 의료 · 고무산업, 전기 · 전자 · 컴퓨터산업의 상장기업, 코스닥기업 544개 기업에 대해 2008년부터 2017년까지 10년간의 융합특허와 경영성과 및 기업가치를 추적하였다. 이의 결과로서 융합특허는 매출액증가율과 Tobin's Q 증가율 모두에 긍정적인(+) 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인되었고, 동종 · 이종융합특허수 증가율은 매출액증가율과 Tobin's Q 증가율에 모두에 긍정적인(+) 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인되었다. 또한 산업특성에 따른 관계검증은 기계 · 자동차 · 금속분야를 통칭한 기계분야에서 동종 · 이종융합특허수 증가율과 매출액증가율간의 관계와 이종융합특허수 증가율과 Tobin's Q 증가율간의 관계, 그리고 화학 · 의료 · 고무분야를 통칭한 화학분야에서 이종융합특허수 증가율과 매출액증가율간의 관계와 동종 · 이종융합특허수 증가율과 Tobin's Q 증가율간의 관계, 그리고 전기 · 전자 · 컴퓨터분야를 통칭한 전자분야에서 동종 · 이종융합특허수 증가율과 매출액증가율간의 관계와 이종융합특허수 증가율과 Tobin's Q 증가율간의 관계에서 영향력이 있음을 확인하였다. 마지막으로 기업유형별 차이 검증에서는 동종 · 이종융합특허수 증가율이 상장기업보다 코스닥기업에서 매출액증가율과 Tobin's Q 증가율 모두에 긍정적인(+) 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인되었다. 기존 대부분의 연구에서 융합 자체를 하나의 개념적인 형태로 인식함에 비해 본 연구는 융합특허를 중심으로 기업들의 최근 경영성과 및 기업가치에 영향을 미치는 요인들을 실증적으로 분석함에 의의가 있으며, 이를 기반으로 융합 환경이 기술혁신의 보편적인 현상으로 인식되는 현 시점에서 기업과 정부 등 여러 혁신 주체들의 기술혁신 및 성장전략의 수립 시 활용할 수 있는 기초자료로서 가치가 있을 것이다.
