외국인 유학생을 위한 한국어 에세이 쓰기 교육 방안 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 한국의 대학(원)에서 수학하는 외국인 유학생을 대상으로, 논지 전개 전략으로서의 패턴을 활용한 에세이 쓰기 교수-학습 방안을 제안하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 외국인 유학생들은 수학 과정에서 학술적 텍스트 생산 활동에 가장 큰 어려움을 겪고 있다. 학술적 텍스트는 자신의 생각을 논리적으로 전개해야하는데 그 논지 전개 방법의 습득이 수월하지 않기 때문이다. 이와 관련하여 외국인 유학생을 위한 쓰기 교육을 다룬 선행 연구들을 분석한 결과, 대학(원)에서 수학 중인 외국인 한국어 학습자들은 학술적 텍스트와 관련된 전문적인 작문 교육의 필요성을 인식하고 있었다. 본 논문은 그러한 요구 분석을 바탕으로 학습자들이 생산한 텍스트의 논리성과 체계성을 더할 수 있는 새로운 교육 방안이 필요하다고 판단하게 되었다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 판단에 따라 대학 수학에 필수적인 학술적 텍스트의 범주를 에세이로 통칭하고 에세이 쓰기 전략으로써 패턴을 활용하는 방안을 제시하고자 하였다. 다양한 에세이 생산 과정에 적용 가능한 패턴의 이해와 활용은 실질적인 쓰기 전략으로 기능할 수 있을 것으로 보았다. 선행 연구와 관련 이론을 검토하여 에세이와 패턴에 대한 개념을 정립하고, 유학생을 위한 현재의 한국어 쓰기 교육에서 에세이와 패턴이 활용되고 있는지의 여부를 파악해 보았다. 주로 어학과정에 학문 목적 과정을 설정한 연세대학교와 서강대학교의 어학과정과 학위과정의 쓰기 교육 과정 및 교재를 각각 분석하여 한국어 쓰기 교육에서의 패턴 활용의 가능성을 탐색하였다. 분석의 결과, 단순한 내용 전개 방법으로써 패턴은 제시하고 있으나, 패턴을 전략으로까지 활용하는 접근은 이루어지지 않고 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 에세이 쓰기에 활용 가능한 패턴을 ‘서술 패턴’, ‘사례 제시 및 인용 패턴’, ‘구분·유형화 패턴’, ‘비교·대조 패턴’, ‘원인과 영향 패턴’, ‘문제 분석 및 해결책 제시 패턴’, ‘논쟁과 설득 패턴’의 일곱 가지로 제시하고, 이들 패턴을 에세이 쓰기 활동에 전략으로 활용할 수 있는 방안을 제시하였다. 즉, 패턴 중심적인 에세이 쓰기 교수-학습 방안을 제안하였다. 외국인 유학생들이 한국어로 자연스럽고 유창한 글을 쓸 수 있으려면 논지 전개 방법에 대한 학습과 훈련이 필수적이다. 본 연구는 ‘패턴(Pattern)’이라는 새로운 전략적 개념을 글쓰기 수업에 도입하려는 시도를 했다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 특히 학습자로 하여금 적절한 패턴을 활용하여 논지를 전개하는 실제적 원리를 터득할 수 있도록 한다는 점에서 기존 연구와의 차별적인 의의를 지닌다. 텍스트의 형식적 특징뿐만 아니라 내용 구조에 대한 학습을 통해 학습자가 능동적으로 쓰기에 참여하여 체계적으로 본문을 구성할 수 있는 교수-학습 방안이다. 학습자들은 피드백 없이 수행해야 하는 과제물 작성이나 보고서 쓰기 등에서 패턴을 활용하여 자기 주도적으로 글쓰기를 완성하고, 자기 점검과 자기 통제를 통해 결과물을 스스로 평가해나갈 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

| The purpose of this study is to suggest essay writing teaching-learning methods using pattern as a point development strategy for foreign students who are studying in Korean university(graduate school). Foreign students are experiencing the biggest difficulty with academic text production activities in college studies. It is because academic text requires to logically develop one’s opinion but learning the point development method is not easy. According to the result of analyzing precedent studies on writing education for foreign students, foreign Korean language learners who are studying in university(graduate school) were recognizing the necessity of professional writing education related to academic texts. Based on the requirement analysis, this study considered that new educational methods are necessary which can add logicality and organization of texts that learners produced. Based on the judgement, this study named the range of academic text which is essential to the college studies as essay and intended to suggest methods of using pattern as an essay writing strategy. This study considered that understanding and application of patterns applicable to the production process of various essays can work as a practical writing strategy. This study established the concept of essay and pattern by reviewing precedent studies and related theories, and determined if essay and pattern are being used in the current Korean writing education for foreign students. This study analyzed the language course and writing academic curriculum and teaching materials of Yonsei University and Sogang University that established curriculum for academic purposes in language course to explore possibilities for pattern usage in Korean writing education. According to the analysis result, they were suggesting pattern as a simple content development method but approach of using pattern as a strategy was not taking place. Therefore, this study suggested 7 types of applicable pattern in essay writing as ‘Description pattern,’ ‘Case presentation and Quotation pattern,’ ‘Division·Classification pattern,’ ‘Comparison·Contrast pattern,’ ‘Cause and Effect pattern,’ ‘Analysis of issue and Presentation of solution pattern,’ and ‘Argumentation and Persuasion pattern,’ and suggested methods of using these patterns as a strategy in essay writing activity. Meaning, this study suggested teaching-learning methods of pattern oriented essay writing. Learning and training of method of thesis development are essential for foreign students to write natural and fluent essays in Korean. The significance of this study is that it has made an attempt to introduce a new strategic concept called ‘pattern’ in writing classes. Specially, the differential significance of this study from existing research is that it intended learners to understand practical principles of developing their point using appropriate pattern. It is a teaching-learning method of composing their writing by actively participating in writing through learning the structure of contents. It is expected that learners can take the lead in completing their writing by using pattern in assignments that need to be carried out without feedback, and to evaluate results on their own through self-monitoring and self-control.
