- Abstract
- Traditional pattern is symbolic of custom and sentiment for each era public. These traditional patterns have been carried as the universal national aesthetic. Today’s traditional patterns have established their homogeneity and identity. In addition, it would be used as the creative art works to demonstrate the national cultural capabilities to the world.
In this respect, we have studied the Dancheong patterns which reflected art with our national emotion and aesthetics. It is great meaning that the artistic value of Dancheong patterns combines into the body painting.
Accordingly, this study is newly proposing the body painting art as traditional image. Body painting works were made by our unique aesthetics, which expresses Dancheong with creative ideas.
For the start, it is in the research method used that we have understood the significance of body painting after reviewing the background and history through the theoretical review of body painting, and then classified the body painting type by a standard of the published works quantity and their representation.
Until now, after surveying the body painting’s expression technique through the preceding research cases and literature investigation, we have reviewed the concept and history of Dancheong to apply it to the body painting. The basic elements and sorts of Dancheong patterns have been classified by the references and preceding research. We evaluated an applied value of Dancheong patterns through the research of the design cases which combined Dancheong patterns.
The body painting works in this research subject were made of using Dancheong patterns which appear on the architecture designated as national cultural assets. The four kinds of works designed include: Jeongsusa the hall (Treasure No. 161), Seoknamsa Youngsanjeon (Treasure No. 823), Naesosa Daeungbojeon (Treasure No. 291) and Geumsansa Daejangjeon (Treasure No. 827). Dancheong of these temples expresses the religious patterns and colours. It shows a luxury but elegant feature well.
According to this research, first, it was able to enhance the dignity and self-conceit about traditional culture by combining Dancheong patterns of Korea traditional architecture designated as national cultural assets to body painting.
It will be expanded into the field which can express the originality and creativity of our differentiated body painting art in the world. Second, the creative types and colour of Dancheong patterns which has infinite design possibilities through a variety combination and reorganization could be proposed as a new works idea of body painting. Third, Dancheong’s strong and abundant colour is possible for a change of various colours depending on brightness and chroma change. And it was really suited to express a colourful image of body painting.
Finally, through this study, Korea’s body painting works should be expanded into creative expression field which can apply the traditional beauty in order to strengthen the global competitiveness and originality of our body painting in the world. Moreover, to suggest various ideas through reinterpretation, improvement and harmony of tradition will become motivation to increase the competitiveness of body painting art.
