- Abstract
- The Korean church which has entered into the second century of mission in korea, has experience a remarkable growth unprecedented in the world mission history. The quantitative growth of the korean church has prompted questions over the character and significance of the growth such as "Is it grow or corpulence ?" and "Is it proper to maintain the present situation of church growth in korea?
The first chapter of this thesis outlines the objective of this study by stressing the importance of the role of ministers in the course of establishing meaning concepts for understanding the phenomenon of church growth in korea.
The second chapter is devoted to a study of theoretical materials on the subject of church growth.
Church growth is a result of the stress on the mission tasks of the church, it is then, the will of God and truthfulness to that wi1l, Fist to undertake a systematic study of church growth was Donald A.McGavran, initial study was extended and developed by C. Peter Wagner and Robert H. Shuller, among others.
These scholars categorize church growth in the following types: qualitative growth, quantitative growth, pioneering growth, and mission growth. These studies of church growth stimulated a strong drive for mission and evangelization. They encouraged evangelization efforts of lay people: gave impetus for the expension of the church power, and stimulated the development of the leadership of ministers.
The study of church contributed greatly to the boosting of enthusiasm for evangelization and mission by stressing the evangelical task of me church.
However church growth also raised some problems, materialism, quantitative expension orientation, church-centredness have caused a deviation away from the essential principles of church, Therefore, the problems of secularization and neutralization of the fath of me church goers are tasks that is need to be confronted.
What is need, therefore, is a combined growth in quantity and qualtity through education, traning and social service programs, for the realization of balanced church growth.
The third chapter examines some theories on the role of ministers.
Leadership can be characterized as a capacity to influence, to motivate, and to coordinate individuals and groups, for them to undertake positive actions for the realization of the goals of the group.
Most valuable type of leadership is democratic leadership which guarantees the participation of all members of the group and promotes constructive relations.
Christian leadership calls for two roles-one that can be characterized as a role of the head which demonstrate willingerss to be at the forefront of all tasks, and the other, a role of servant devoted to service.
The characteristic of the leadership of a minister calls for full and balance endowment of spritual capacity that is founded on Word and prayer; technical capacity of character, developed through, humbleness and rich experience.
Thefore, a minister, who plays an important role in church growth, must be equiped with a confident sense of his mission, quality of character, and education, and especially spiritual qualification, to be able to respond capably to the task granted to him, and become a minister who can stimulate the growth of the church.
Minister must have appropriate attitude, must lead an exemplary private life style, minister must engage in constant se1f examination, and 1ead pious life, and at the same time a good family person, and continue in sustained study. hastly the fourth chapter, deals with the role of a minister who greatly influence the church growth, The role of a minister in the most important facter in the church. The role can described as it relates to the mission work, educational work, proclamatory work.
As part of missionary role,a minister must motivate the fathful to undertake mission work; must be able to present a mission strategy; cultivate mission workers through evangelism and discipleship training; and attend carefully to the development of relationship between the existing church members and new comers to the church.
The educational role of a minister is vital for the qualitative growth of the church. Minister must be in forefront of all educational programmes and activies, the must take careful and full responsiblity for undertaking church Bible schoo1s, 1ay peop1e training, training of officers of congregational council, and training of church school teachers.
The final important facter in church growth is the proclamatory role of the mister. Preching-sermon-has a direct effect on church growth. Therefore, a minister must prepare sermons throughly and recognize cleary the demand of the congregation, to be able to give strong inspiration. This requires for the minister himself to undertake a deep study and to undergo a deep spiritual experience.
Only when there is unconditional reliance on prayer, meditation, and Holy sprit on basis of a proper faith relationship with God, can the prepared preaching become a powerful message, and enable the congregation to receive God's Grace, and move to serve in the wholeness of life, and become capable of evangelization.
This is the necessary basis for the growth and revival of the church.
