개신교 선교사 한국어교육의 형성과 전개에 대한 사적 연구

Abstract

이 논문은 한국어교육의 역사를 다룬 통시적 연구로 19세기 후반에서 20세기 중반 한국에서 전개되었던 서양인 개신교 선교사들의 한국어교육의 전개 양상과 성격을 구체적이고 실증적으로 고찰하고, 그 의미와 한계를 밝혀 한국어교육사 안에서 개신교 선교사 한국어교육이 지니는 위상을 새롭게 정립하는 것이 주된 목적이다. 이를 위해 선교회의 공식 연회록과 보고서, 개인 서신 등 관련 자료를 확보하고 한국어교육 관련 내용을 추출하여 분석에 활용하였다. 먼저 개신교 선교사들의 한국어교육이 전개된 양상을 ⑴교파별 선교회 중심 한국어교육 시기, ⑵단기 집중 강좌 중심 한국어교육 시기, ⑶연합언어학교 중심 한국어교육 시기, ⑷현대 한국어교육으로의 이행기로 구분하여 관련 사료를 중심으로 면밀하게 고찰하였다. ⑴교파별 선교회 중심 한국어교육 시기는 한국에 진출한 여러 교파 선교회 중에서 주도적인 역할을 하였던 〈북장로회〉와 〈미감리회〉를 중심으로 살펴보았는데 이들 선교회는 산하에 선교사들의 언어 교육을 관리하는 하부 조직인 〈언어 위원회〉를 두고 일종의 학습 가이드라인인 ‘학습과정’과 선임 선교사가 후임 선교사들의 학습을 돕는 ‘멘토링 시스템’을 활용하여 소속 선교사들의 한국어 학습을 적극적으로 통제하고 관리하였다. ⑵단기 집중 강좌 중심 한국어교육 시기는 이전 시기 한국어교육의 한계였던 ‘교실 수업’이 1909년부터 〈북장로회〉에서 시작한 평양에서의 《Language Class》라는 단기 집중 강좌를 통해 나타났다. 이후 〈미감리회〉와의 협력을 거쳐, 당시 ‘에큐메니컬 운동’의 영향으로 조직된 선교회들 간의 통합 기구였던 〈연합선교협의회〉로 이어져 1914년까지 평양과 서울에서 1년에 한 차례씩 개설되었다. ⑶연합언어학교 중심 한국어교육 시기에는 교육과정의 연속성을 가지고 상설 운영된 연합언어학교인 《Language School》을 중심으로 한국어교육이 전개되었다. 1920년부터 적어도 1936년까지 운영된 이 학교는 교육과정에 맞춰 개발된 전용 교과서, 표준화된 지필과 구술평가, 수료증의 발급, 급여를 지급받는 상근 교원 등 근대적인 제도적 교육기관의 모습을 갖추고 있었다. ⑷현대 한국어교육으로의 이행기에는 1950년을 전후하여 새롭게 등장한 《Korean Language School》이 1940년을 전후하여 일제에 의해 선교사들이 강제 추방되며 중단되었던 《Language School》이 해방 이후 돌아온 선교사들에 의해 재건된 것임을 다시 확인하고, 이 기관이 《연세대학교 한국어학당》이라는 한국 최초의 현대적인 한국어 교육기관의 설립으로 이어졌음을 재확인하였다. 19세기 후반에서 20세기 중반까지 한반도에서 이루어졌던 개신교 선교사들의 한국어교육은 교육의 방법적 측면에서는 원격교육과 집합교육의 상보적 운영과 내용 중심 접근의 활용이라는 점에서, 교육의 내용적 측면에서는 선교를 위한 한국 문화 이해을 위한 교육 내용 구성과 당시의 중층적인 문자생활이 반영된 한자와 문체 교육이 강조된 교육 내용의 구성이라는 점에서 특징적인 모습을 찾을 수 있었다. 개신교 선교사들의 한국어교육의 전개 과정을 고찰하는 이러한 일련의 과정을 통해 단편적이나마 현대 한국어교육 이전 시기의 한국어교육의 전체적인 흐름을 짚어볼 수 있었고, 이를 통해 현대 한국어교육 형성의 토대가 19세기 후반부터 시작된 서양인 개신교 선교사들의 한국어교육에 있다는 것을 밝혀냈다는 점에서 이 연구의 의의를 찾을 수 있다. 또한 교육의 주체와 학습자 측면에서 일정 부분 한계는 있으나 당시 서양인 개신교 선교사들의 한국어교육이 가진 외국어 교육으로서의 근대적 성격을 확인하였다는 점 역시 이 연구의 의의라고 할 수 있다. 그러나 19세기 후반에서 20세기 중반까지로 그 시기를 제한한 점, 동일한 시기에 병존하였던 한국에서 일본인 대상 한국어교육과의 세밀하고 종합적인 비교 분석이 이루어지지 않은 점은 이 연구가 지닌 한계이다. |This study is a diachronic analysis of the history of Korean Language Education, aimed at freshly establishing the status of Korean Language Education by protestant missionaries within the history of Korean Language Education through specifically and empirically investigating the development and nature of Korean Language Education by the Western protestant Missions for their missionaries taking place from the late 19th century to the mid 20th century, and elucidating its significance and limitations. For this purpose, relevant materials such as minutes of official minutes of Missions, reports and personal correspondences were collected, and the contents with respect to Korean Language Education extracted and used for analysis. The development of Korean Language Education of protestant missionaries was divided into four stages including (1) the time when Korean Language Education was mainly conducted in missions of each religious sect, (2) the time when it was mainly conducted in the form of a short-term intensive course, (3) the time when it was conducted through a union language school and (4) the time of transition to modern Korean Language Education, and analyzed thoroughly focusing on relevant historical records. (1) The time when Korean Language Education was conducted mainly in missions of each sect for their missionaries was investigated by focusing on activities of the Presbyterian Church in the United State of America (PCUSA) and the Methodist Episcopal Church (MEC), both of which played a leading role among various sects having entered Korea. They had a sub-organization 'Language Committee' in charge of managing language education of their missionaries, and controlled and managed the Korean Language Education actively by utilizing the 'course of study', a learning guideline, and a 'mentoring system' that enabled a missionary to help his successor's learning. ⑵ During the time when Korean Language Education was mainly conducted in the form of short-term intensive courses, the 'classroom lesson', which had been a limitation of Korean Language Education in the preceding time, emerged through a short-term intensive course 'Language Class' in Pyengyang initiated in 1909 by PCUSA. Later, after a coordination with MEC, it became under management by the Federal Council Protestant Evangelical Missions in Korea, which was a united organization of missions formed under the influence of the 'ecumenical movement' of the time, and had been opened once a year in Pyengyang and Seoul, respectively, until 1914. ⑶ During the time when it was conducted through a Union Language School, 'Language School' created and operated permanently as a union language school of missions to secure the continuity of the curriculum played a central role in conducting Korean Language Education. This school operated from 1920 to at least 1936 had a modern institutional education system such as dedicated textbooks developed according to defined curricula, standardized written and oral assessments, issue of completion certificates and paid permanent staff. ⑷ In analysis of the time of transition to modern Korean Language Education, the 'Korean Language School' emerging freshly around 1950 was confirmed to be a reconstruction of the 'Language School' that had been closed down around 1940 after missionaries had been expelled from Korea by the Japanese colonialists. Those missionaries returned to Korea after the Liberation and rebuilt the school under the name 'Korean Language School'. It was also confirmed again that this institution lead to the establishment of the Korea's first modern Korean education institution 'YONSEI KLI'. Given that the methodology of Korean Language Education by protestant missionaries from the late 19th century to the mid 20th century in the Korean Peninsula was the utilization of the complementary management of distance education and gathering education and the content-based approach, characteristic features in terms of education contents could be found in that they consisted of the lessons to understand the Korean culture for mission and the emphasis of Chinese characters and writing style reflecting multi-layered literacy life at the time. This study has a significance in that it could identify the whole flow of Korean Language Education conducted before the modern Korean Language Education through a series of process investigating the development process of Korean Language Education by protestant missionaries, which also revealed that the foundation of the modern Korean Language Education lies in the efforts by the Western protestant missionaries having started from the late 19th century. Moreover, although there are a few limitations in terms of the teachers and learners of education, this study has another significance in that it identified the modern nature of Korean Language Education by the Western protestant missionaries as a foreign language education at the time. However, this study also has limitations in that it examined only the time span from the late 19th century to the mid 20th century, and did not provide finely detailed and comprehensive comparative analysis of Korean Language Education for the Japanese in Korea, which also existed during the same period.
