Abstract
As digital transformation, led by artificial intelligence, advances rapidly, the scope of Visual Merchandising (VMD) work has expanded well beyond product placement and in-store display to encompass brand strategy development, content planning and production, digital media channel operation, and consumer experience design. Despite this expansion, VMD curricula offered by domestic higher-education institutions remain concentrated on store-display practice, and the lack of organic linkage between the competencies required in the actual workplace and the content of education has been raised as a persistent problem. In particular, because no National Competency Standards (NCS) classification defines VMD as an independent sub-category, systematic research that structurally analyzes job competencies and connects them to curriculum design has been notably scarce.
Against this backdrop, the purpose of this study is to design and propose a four-year undergraduate curriculum on the basis of the results of an importance analysis of VMD job competencies. To this end, a mixed-methods research approach combining theoretical review and empirical analysis was applied. The study was structured in three stages: (1) analysis of job-perception types using the Q methodology; (2) quantification and qualitative validation of the importance of job competencies using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Focus Group Interviews (FGI); and (3) design of a four-year undergraduate VMD curriculum grounded in Tyler's (1949) principles of curriculum development. In addition, member checking with an expert panel was conducted to confirm the field validity of the designed curriculum.
In the first stage, 45 VMD job statements were developed based on the competency units and performance criteria of the NCS fields of visual design, interior design, exhibition design, cultural-content planning, and advertising, and a Q-sorting was conducted with 30 experts who possessed both practical and educational experience in VMD. The collected data were processed through factor analysis using principal component analysis and Varimax rotation in PQMethod (Version 2.35). The analysis identified four factors satisfying the eigenvalue criterion of 1.00 or higher, with a cumulative explanatory power of 60%. The first factor was characterized as a 'brand-strategy-centered planning and execution type' that regards brand strategy development and planning as the core of VMD work; the second as a 'content-strategy-based analytical type' that strategically analyzes the structure of content planning, distribution, and operation; the third as a 'practice-oriented design and collaborative execution type' that emphasizes field-based design competency and collaboration; and the fourth as an 'exhibition-design-centered applied-practice type' that regards the practical realization of exhibition and spatial staging and digital emotional expression as central. Through a terminological reconstruction intended to convert these four perception types into the upper-level criteria of the AHP hierarchy, they were finalized as the four job-competency categories of 'Brand Strategy and Communication (A),' 'Content Planning and Execution (B),' 'On-site Design and Practical Operation (C),' and 'Exhibition Design and Digital Emotional Staging (D).'
In the second stage, the four finalized job-competency categories were set as the upper-level criteria of the AHP, and four NCS-based detailed competency elements corresponding to each category were configured as lower-level criteria, thereby constructing a three-level analytic structure. A pairwise-comparison survey was administered to an expert panel comprising 32 VMD industry practitioners and 11 professors and instructors from related departments; responses from 43 participants were used in the final analysis after excluding 5 respondents whose consistency ratio (CR) exceeded the 0.1 threshold. At the upper-element level, 'Content Planning and Execution' (B, 0.3186) ranked first, followed by 'Exhibition Design and Digital Emotional Staging' (D, 0.2362), 'On-site Design and Practical Operation' (C, 0.2293), and 'Brand Strategy and Communication' (A, 0.2159). With respect to the composite weights of the lower-level elements, 'content operation planning and budget management' (0.1106) and 'application and ideation of spatial staging' (0.0879) ranked highest, confirming that an execution competency integrating planning and implementation functions as the most central job competency in the VMD field. The relatively narrow distribution of the four categories' weights provides quantitative support for the principle that the curriculum must not be biased toward any single area. The FGI results converged on the need to strengthen content-planning and digital-emotional-staging competencies, to integrate the entire planning process pedagogically, and to incorporate AI competencies into coursework in a staged manner, all of which were consistent with the AHP findings.
Synthesizing these analytical results, the study adopted Tyler's (1949) principles of curriculum development as the design framework and proposed a four-year undergraduate VMD curriculum. The four stages of goal setting, content selection, organization of learning experiences, and evaluation were mapped onto the first through fourth academic years: the first year centers on foundational competency formation in Brand Strategy (A) and On-site Design (C); the second year introduces core competencies through a balanced arrangement of A, B, and C; the third year intensively deepens Content Planning (B) and Exhibition Design and Digital Emotional Staging (D); and the fourth year culminates in an integrated capstone performance encompassing all competencies. In accordance with the principle of sequence—that the more important a competency is, the more it should be deepened upon a sufficient foundation of prior learning—the order of importance and the order of grade placement were deliberately separated. AI competency was organized not as an independent job domain but as a tool competency supporting the four domains, configured as a module that deepens progressively from literacy introduction in the first year to integrated performance in the fourth year. The final curriculum comprises a total of 24 courses, including 19 NCS-based courses and 5 AI-related courses newly established through the FGI. The proposed curriculum was reviewed through member checking by a panel of seven experts (three educators and four industry professionals), and was confirmed to have high validity across all items, including the appropriateness of course composition, grade placement, the importance–placement separation logic, the mode of AI integration, and field relevance by job domain.
This study makes three contributions. First, by empirically demonstrating that experts' perceptions of VMD competencies are structured into four heterogeneous types, it establishes a basis for the principle that the curriculum should not be biased toward any single area. Second, through a mixed-methods design sequentially linking the Q methodology, AHP, and FGI, it presents a coherent methodological chain extending from qualitative exploration to quantitative verification and curriculum design. Third, by explicitly arguing—on the basis of Tyler's principle of sequence—that the order of importance does not coincide with the order of grade placement, it secures an explainable rationale for course composition. As a 'design study,' however, the actual operation of the curriculum and verification of its effectiveness lie outside its scope; these may be examined through a longitudinal tracking study measuring graduates' self-efficacy and employers' satisfaction by competency domain. As the findings reflect a specific point in time and the composition of the expert panel, the proposed job elements and course composition should be understood as a dynamic design requiring periodic review rather than a fixed blueprint.|AI
Tyler의 목표 설정(Goal Setting)→내용 선정(Content Selection)→학습 경험 조직(Experience Organisation)→평가(Evaluation)의 4단계 순환 구조를 1~4학년 학제에 대응시켜, 1학년은 브랜드 전략(A)·현장 설계(C) 영역 중심의 기초 역량 형성, 2학년은 A·B·C 균형 배치를 통한 핵심 역량 도입, 3 학년은 AHP 1·2순위인 콘텐츠 기획(B)과 전시·디지털 감성 연출(D) 영역의 집중 심화, 4학년은 A+B+C+D 전 역량의 통합 캡스톤 수행 및 평가의 구조로 교육과정을 설계하였다.
