- Abstract
이를 통해 본 연구는 타이포그래피 장식의 개념을 재정립하고, 향후 디지털 및 인공지능 시대의 문자 표현과 시각 커뮤니케이션 연구에 이론적 기반을 제공하고자 하였다.|This study aims to examine how typographic ornamentation has been generated, transformed, and expanded in accordance with changes in media environments, and to reilluminate the roles and significance that ornamentation has performed throughout this process. Whereas existing typography research has largely focused on legibility, functionality, or the formal transformation of letterforms driven by technological change, this study redefines ornamentation not as a supplementary or non-essential element but as an active formative system that organically combines with the technological development of media to generate new visual experiences.
The study was conducted through literature review and case analysis. A theoretical foundation was established by reviewing the history of typography and graphic design, media theory, and prior research on ornament and decoration. Based on shifts in media environments as the primary criterion, representative typographic cases from each period were examined to trace the changing patterns of ornamentation. The spatial scope of the study was limited to Europe and the United States, which had a significant influence on the formation and development of modern printing, while the temporal scope extended from the age of manuscripts through the print era to the digital era.
On this basis, the study first reviewed the lexical and theoretical definitions of ornament along with prior research in order to clarify the conceptual distinction between "ornament" and "decoration," and classified the characteristics of ornamentation into three types—Rhetorical (Decorative), Functional, and Systemic ornament—to serve as an analytical framework. The study then traced the historical transformation of ornamentation within print media environments: the expression of sanctity and authority in the manuscript and Renaissance periods; the organic curves and emotional richness of the Rococo period; the intensified commercial visibility of the Industrial Revolution and Victorian eras; the revival of ornamentation through the Arts and Crafts Movement; the structural internalization of ornamentation in Art Deco, Modernism, and the International Typographic Style; and the dissolution of the boundary between letterform and ornament in Postmodernism. Furthermore, through cases such as variable fonts, dingbat and emoji fonts, kinetic and interactive typography, and dynamic logo identities, the study analyzed how ornamentation has expanded in both its methods of generation and modes of expression within digital environments.
The analysis reveals that typographic ornamentation has continuously reconstructed its character—from a symbol of sanctity and authority in the manuscript era, to a means of reproduction and standardization in the print era, to an internalized structural and functional principle under Modernism, to a restoration of expressiveness under Postmodernism, and finally to an experiential element encompassing temporality and interactivity in the digital era. This demonstrates that ornamentation is not a fixed concept but a core component of visual communication that has been continuously transformed according to media technology and sociocultural context. This study conceptualizes this contemporary expansion as "Omni-Ornamentation," proposing that ornamentation now functions not merely as aesthetic embellishment but as an expanded system of visual experience that mediates the relationships among letterform, media, technology, and human beings. Through this, the study seeks to redefine the concept of typographic ornamentation and to provide a theoretical foundation for future research on textual expression and visual communication in the digital and artificial intelligence era..
