'캣츠'의 扮裝을 통한 性格構築
- Abstract
- Cultural Arts toward the public has been greatly changed with various forms in modern Society. The popular culture makes the public's life abundant much and provides various experiences, especially to the youth.
Under the situation like this, the musical is getting its status as a general arts, in which the play, music and dance are united together. The musical, cats, which is one of British classical musicals and has also ever been performed in Korea, is a piece of work to describe the human world through the cats. This thesis is to aim at studying the process of forming characters that analogize various human faces out of the symbol and ecology of the animal that express their feelings with outward behavior language through make-up. The make-up is a medium of visual expression in performing arts.
For this purpose, in the chapter II, the origin of the cat and its characteristics and kinds as an animal are discussed in quite depth, and a symbol of the cat existed in life and culture of each different country examined by dividing the cat as a symbolic subject of the West and the East. In the chapter III, the process of forming major characters is suggested in illustration through make-up to analyze characters and individualities of the cats described by the play book taking into consideration of in outward characteristics and conditions such as periodic background, environment, inheritance, temper, health condition, etc. Major characters of the Cats such as Gumbie, Rum Tum Tugger, Grizabella, Bustopher Jones, Mungojerrie & Rumpelteazer, Deuteronomy, Gus, Skimbleshanks, Macavity, Mistoffelees are the objects.
On the way of expressing characteristics of the animal on human faces, it's somewhat exaggerated by relying on personal judgement because a human can't be an animal completely and detailed areas such as brainanthropology, physiognomy, and phrenology couldn't be included even through a wider study was tried by applying adjacent field of studies to make-up.
The make-up for the stage in performing arts is a field of visual arts that needs concrete visual effect of the stage. It needs to be researched more systematically for expanding scope of academic, theories and technical skills. With this chance of studying for the thesis, more active research with a full recognition toward not only the nature, a source of endless designs, but also other animals introduced in performing art works are expected.
