흥행 애니메이션에 나타난 유희성에 관한 연구

Abstract

국내 애니메이션 산업은 성장 잠재력이 높은 분야로 인정받고 있으며, 기술력 발전과 우수한 전문 인력양성으로 ‘100조 매출’ 시대를 열고 있다. 하지만 극장용 창작 애니메이션의 현실은 다르다. 2000년 이후 애니메이션 제작사가 증가하면서 산업규모 역시 확장되었지만 극장용 창작 애니메이션의 매출현황은 하락함으로써 애니메이션 제작에 부정적 영향을 미치고 있다. 이에 본 연구자는 오락매체의 중요 요소이며, 흥행 애니메이션 기획에 근본 토대가 되는 ‘유희성’에 주목하여 연구를 진행하였다. 따라서 본 연구의 목적은 유희적 표현의 유형을 '개념적(Conceptual)표현', '시각적(Visual)표현', '실제적(Practical)표현', '상관적(Relational)표현'으로 분류하여 모호한 유희적 표현방법을 체계화하고 그 근거를 토대로 국내 극장용 애니메이션을 기획 연출하는 데에 있어 웃음 유발의 실질적 방법론을 제시하는 것이었다. 연구방법으로는 흥행 애니메이션의 유희성을 분석하기 위하여 문헌에 나타난 흥행의 정의를 비교한 다음, 성공한 작품으로 분류되는 애니메이션을 선정하였다. 그 결과 <겨울왕국(2014)>, <슈렉포에버(2010)>, <라푼젤(2010)>, <쿵푸팬더1(2008)>를 선택하여 분석하였다. 선정된 작품을 바탕으로 웃음유발의 근원을 밝히기 위해 유희의 종류와 표현유형, 표현방법으로 분류 하였다. 이러한 3가지 분류를 토대로 네 가지 흥행 애니메이션에 나타난 유희적 표현유형과 방법을 사례분석 하였고, 그 결과를 유형별로 종합 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 네 가지 흥행 애니메이션에 나타난 웃음유발요소를 살펴보면 애니메이션의 배경 및 캐릭터의 성향과 가장 유사한 유희적 표현유형이 다른 유희적 표현유형들보다 많이 사용되는 것으로 분석 되었다. 이는 애니메이션에서의 배경설정 및 캐릭터의 성향이 극의 전개에 핵심요소인 만큼 유희적 표현유형 역시 위와 동일하게 배경설정 및 캐릭터의 성향에 영향을 받는 것으로 파악되었다. 둘째, 관객들의 유희적 감정형성을 위하여 일반적으로 사용되는 유희의 종류가 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 유희의 종류는 ‘해학’, ‘풍자’, ‘기지’, ‘아이러니’로 분류 되는데, 재치 및 창의적 웃음으로 정의되는 기지가 보편적으로 사용되는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 관객에게 즐거운 감정 유도하는 유희적 표현은 캐릭터를 중심으로 이루어진다는 점이다. 즉 애니메이션에서의 캐릭터 위치는 대단히 중요한 요소이다. 이와 마찬가지로 웃음을 유발시키는 장치 역시 캐릭터를 위주로 형성된다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 측면에서 지금까지의 연구를 종합해 볼 때, 흥행 애니메이션에 나타난 유희적 표현유형 및 방법에 의한 극장용 창작 애니메이션을 제작할 경우, 흥행성을 기초한 웃음 관련 연출력과 스토리텔링에 대한 대안을 찾을 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.| The animation industry is being recognized as the industry with the high potentials to become a higher value-added industry. Also, the technological development in domestic animation industry is remarkable. The creative theatre animations had been continuously growing since 2000, yet A Hen into the Wild, coproduced by Myung Film and Odoltogi in 2011, was the last success in the industry. Thus, the sales of theatre animations has fallen, negatively influencing the production of animations. Accordingly, this study focuses on the humor, an important element of successful animations. Humor is also an essential element of all media of entertainment. The positive effects of laughter on human beings are already proven through various researches and there are also lots of literature references that investigates the humor from the philosophical perspectives. Yet, those studies are inappropriate to be applied on the actual processes of producing animations, including writing scenarios for and directing animations. Thus, the purpose of this study is to collect various examples of induced humor based on the Schopenhauer’s philosophical concepts of humor with interdisciplinary approach to humor codes. Also the study aims for systematizing the methods of expressing the ambiguous humorous elements. As a method of research, 5 successful animations were selected and the humorous elements in the selected animations were categorized by types and closely analyzed. The result of analysis shows that successful animations tend to express humorous elements differently depending on the settings of the animations and characteristics of characters. Such result implies that the settings and characteristics of characters are not only the most critical elements of the narrative, but also the important aspects in expressing the humor. Moreover, although the methods of expressing humor vary with the settings and characteristics of characters, there were still some types of humor that were used universally in the 5 sample successful animations. Lastly, the study reveals that there is a role that mainly expresses the humorous elements. Conclusively, an interdisciplinary methodology of inducing laughter can be proposed based on the overall result of this study. Furthermore, such methodology can be used to suggest the types and methods of expressing humorous elements that suits the characteristics of an animation in the production and planning of theatre animations. Ultimately, it is expected that a solution to the laughter-related storytelling method, which builds the foundation for a successful theater animation, will be found.
