Abstract
Glitter cosmetic materials are the worlds leading makeup items in the 21st century, and still continuously lots of researches are conducted to develop new and advanced materials. In this paper, we studied application of glitter materials.
Through the texture of glitter materials and application methods, glitter makeup can be applied in a various ways, for example, glitter base makeup for refining skin’s texture, color makeup using glitter or pearl shadows, or makeup using objects such as cubic, stone, spangles. These glitter makeup are currently being patronized in commercials ads and fashion shows.
To begin with, to understand the passage of makeup trend we studied the relationship between the change in fashion, art and makeup by referring to preceding researches and literature as a theoretical approach.
Here, we suggested four major features showing why it started to use glitter materials for makeup and what social environment have influence on glitter makeup. First is one of most popular characteristics in 21st century, "Well-Being". By this highly spread culture code, people pursue a better life, which makes glitter makeup another novel culture code. Second it is the new consuming trend based on consumer’s own unique sense of buying products that can satisfy themselves. Third, the expansion of woman’s right leads to, not placing emphasis on feminine beauty, but on their natural features, thus they prefer to have natural looking makeup rather than too showy makeup. Fourth, the development of digital TV added more preference to natural makeup. Furthermore, highly improved broadcast equipments make it possible to show pearl or glossy feature itself vividly in screen, which results in glitter makeup being prevailing through the entertainment business.
There are several kinds of trend makeup using glitter materials, such as glossy makeup, silky makeup, luminescence makeup, simmer makeup, glitter makeup, moisture makeup, and polish makeup. This classification is defined by what glitter material and what methods being applied. Therefore, depending on what part of face and what materials applied, it results in various kinds of appearance.
Next, we designed the questionnaire for the further study, and then got the following results.
-Most strong preference, for the images, which was chosen by over 50% responses, was Image A showing the application based on makeup-base or foundation step.
-A majority of responses chose "Moisture Makeup" as a name of Image A representing makeup-base or foundation step.
-A majority of responses chose "Polish Makeup" as a name of Image B representing powder or cheek makeup step.
-A majority of responses prefer "Luminescent Makeup" as a name of Image C representing shadows or lip step, but yet other 7 names were also evenly selected.
-An overwhelming numbers chose "Pearl Polish Makeup"as a name of Image D representing all of makeup step mentioned before.
-In the question asking what base makeup is a recent trendy makeup style, "polishing" was selected by most of respondents, and "glittering", "natural" were followed.
-Top answer to the question "what part is most accentuated in recent trendy makeup?" was skin texture expression, and shadow, lip were followed.
-78% of respondents owned 2-3 pieces of cosmetic products possessing peal or glitter materials. In the group more often putting on makeup and paying more interest in trendy fashion, a high ratio of respondents answered yes to owing peal or glittering makeup products.
-For a step applying pearl or other glitter material containing cosmetics, 33.7% of respondents have preference for powder or cheek makeup step, but yet significant number of respondents, 33.4%, have preference for base or foundation step.
-The reason for their preference as a glitter cosmetic applying step was high effectiveness to show natural glittering expression, regardless of what makeup step they selected. This result suggested that the way of glitter makeup people feel natural is very personal and subjective.
As mentioned before, due to vague criteria of makeup terms representing texture expression or glitter material expression, there is research limitations of this study. The analysis of questionnaire in this study provided the bibliometric detailed data, thus we expect this result may provide some guidance for reestablishing makeup terms in future. However, because we conducted this questionnaire survey of people in their twenties who are beauty major college students, there must be scrupulous attention to be applied.
This study may be helpful for understanding current makeup trend more intensively, for creating new trend and also for new cosmetic development.
