Abstract

It is very clear that the Feng-Shui Ji-Ri was one of the most major theories of constructing villages, when we look around the location of our villages or cities, at these days. Not only it has much effected to environmental culture of our history, also we can find many records that it was most important point when the city was constructed. The Feng-Shui Ji-Ri can be pointed out that it is effected by the theory of YinYang & Five Elements. The YinYang & Five Elements theory is the basic of oriental philosophies of Korean and Chinese area. The point of this theory is the Vigor. The meaning of Vigor is the energy that dispersed in the nature. When the vigor gathers, it becomes lives and when lives died, it is dispersed and goes back as the Vigor. The Feng-Shui Ji-Ri is based on the YinYang & Five Elements theory as like any other oriental philosophies, for example oriental medical, horoscopic data, physiognomy or fortunetelling. According to the Few-Shui Ji-Ri, the human being is born with the Vigor from Heaven and Earth, therefore human keeps the shape of heaven and earth in, as the very small universe. The Human is composed as heart, vigor and spirit. And these three elements are symbolic representation of the Heaven, Earth, and greatness of nature. After all, human is created with the Vigor has meaning of Heaven, the heart of Earth and the spirit of God between heaven and earth. Among them, the trial to know about specially the Earth has been developed systematically, as the Feng-Shui Ji-Ri. Human is born from the nature, so the growing of human depends on the absorption from nature. The meaning of Propitious site in Feng-Shui Ji-Ri is the land with the Vigor. In the propitious land, mountain, water and YinYang make symmetry. Then this symmetry produces good vigor. The land satisfied these conditions could be the propitious site. For this reason, people draw it fine the land of grave or house, till the present. Feng-Shui Ji-Ri has started from the question how can make harmony with the earth that keeps the live vigor, and developed as the trial to figure out the vigor of earth in the water flow or shape of earth. There are few important elements to form the propitious site. One is the mountain. As like mountain has worshiped by everybody in the world, it has also worshiped by Korean as the guardian of village or country. Because, People believed that it has more power than human. Water is also one of the important element, as we can know the meaning of the word, Feng-Shui (it has the meaning Wind and Water,) Another is the bearing, and there are two bearings, Yin and Yang. If opposite bearings meet together, the good vigor can be produced, buy same bearings meet, there will be bad vigor. Long time ago, The king, Lee Seong Kye moved the capitol to Hanyang from Gaesung, at the Feng-Shui Ji-Ri. Not only capitol, also palaces as like Kyungbok or changdeuk were positioned at the same way. Thus, we can sure that the Feng-Shui Ji-Ri was applied to the geographical condition of Seoul city. Mt. Bukhan is the major mountain of Seoul and its vigor is passed to the Bohyun-Bong on south, and from it, passed to the Mr. Bukak. This makes all over Seoul as the propitious site. Mt. Naksan that is in the left side of Seoul, has meaning of Chungyong, right side Mr. Inwang is Baekho, front side Mr. Namsan is Jujak, and rear side Mr. Bukak is Hyunmu. Seoul as the propitious site, is surrounded these 4 internal mountains. This is one of the famous types of propitious site, According to Feng-Shui Ji-Ri, it is the reason why Seoul could be the economic, politic and cultural center. At present, Seoul city has occupied land much more than before, and now it is surrounded with 4 external mountains, Mt. Bukhan for north, Mr. Deukyang for west, Mt. Kwanak for south and Mt. Yongma for east. Chungkye-chun (stream) is from west of Seoul and passed through Seoul City. Firstly, it is started from Mt. Inwang for west, and meets with the water from Mt. Bukak for north. Then takes water from Mt. Naksan for east and Mt. Namsan for south, and joins with Han River, finally. From this point, the direction of water flows turns and flows to the west. We call it backflow. When the lung, Lee Seongkye moved the capitol, Chungkye-chun ran through the Seoul, and now, Han River runs through the Seoul. The ideal type of water in Feng-Shui Ji-Ri is the shape of bow. The important point is the internal part of the curve line of water flow as like bow. The Han River winds its way through south of Seoul till the Yeoui-Do. And flows straightly to the Kanghwa. Up to now, we have confirmed geographical situation of Seoul city. And we can figure out that The Feng-Shui Ji-Ri is the scientific knowledge based on the experience and the geographical view that has effected to the Korean and other oriental race, absolutely. It is the natural wisdom to adopt only good thing to the real life after grasping the point of land shape, wind, water flow and etc. by YinYang theory. However, it is also true that we exclude it and can not see its real value, unfortunately because of the ill-advised western culture and almighty materialism. Hereafter, It is really needed to study it systemically to make it practical knowledge that can be useful for selection of a residential area. Some of foresighted scholars are studying it separately, by themselves. However, to make it grow more, government or a search organization would handle it, in a full way. Under the settlement of this activity and study of Feng-Shui Ji-Ri, it can be the new way of constructing a residential area. Moreover, it could present the new measurement for preventing destroy of nature and overcoming environmental pollution.
