Abstract

In the traditional korean family system, parents have been served as a master of that family, so the status of the old has been high in the family or society, and the problem of welfare of old age has not appeared. But changes like industrialization and urbanization are threatening the traditional family system with the reduction of family attendances. And in the society with older and older members, the old are weaker and their physical, mental problems are increasing rapidly. Since long age, we have thought from the deep inside of us that senile dementia is a dotage, and regarded it as a shame to family. But now in the problems of old age, the senile dementia is understood as a disease, and not only the others but also that man affected it recognizes his illness. The senile dementia became known through the socialization only 4 or 5 years age. Therefore, while social counterplans or institutions for it are few, the affected who want to use institutions are increasing. It is inevitable to commit the affected by senile dementia to institutions because they are dropped in social function as well as physical and mental functions, so the family couldn't take care of them. Then it is necessary to present some adequate services which the institutions can give. This study is a research on the service of korean institutions for the senile dementia, and describes theoretical basis and literary studies centering around especially Yung-Rak sanitarium and Jung-Won senile dementia sanitarium. First of all, it must be considered that the health problems of the old are connected very narrowly with the extension of average span of life. To offer them a best service, it is important to guarantee the talented brains above all and to give them medical and financial support from the governmental and private organizations. To raise the quality of service, first, there must be at least a senile dementia sanitarium in a district to offer the affected by senile dementia a accurate diagnosis and specialized medical services. And secondly, people as well as the government must try positively to prevent and secure the senile dementia to make old ages as a healthy and happy one. Thirdly, a synthetic environment like the transmission system of the affected, the arrangement of specialists and the improvement of qualities of carers must be accomplished for a effective care. And fourthly, the institutions must offer comfortable surroundings like 'my home' to the affected. As a conclusion, the problem of care must be studied consistently in the welfare and medical, cultural fields, and the institutions for the senile dementia must be exploited as a realization of cure-unity and social work of unity, and there must be a related support for it.
