최남선의 『時調類聚』연구

Abstract

The purposes of this study were to investigate the relationships between 『Sijoyuchwi』 published by Yukdang Choi Nam-seon in 1928 and the major literary theories of the times by reviewing it in its period and to examine its content substance and significance in the literary history. Its author Choi engaged in diverse activities in the academic and cultural arena from late Chosun to the liberation. Being an active member of the National Literature School in the middle 1920s, he led the full-scale movement to revive sijo. In face, he is evaluated to have left many achievements in the history of sijo literature by publishing the very first creative sijo collection Hundred-and-Eight Torments of Mankind and a traditional old sijo collection 『Sijoyuchwi』. 『Sijoyuchwi』 has failed to attract intensive attention compared to the often cases in which it was the subject of discussion. As an anthology, however, it has enough value as a subject of research in the following aspects: first, it holds total 1,400 works, the biggest number so far; secondly, it is a new text in the line of anthologies by subjects, revealing the contemporary people's perceptions of sijo even though they were not general; and finally, it is an anthology of old sijo published in the late 1920s when it was early modern. An investigation into its publication and conception in its period tells that it was part of Yukdang's movement to revive sijo, as well. The roots of its works were also examined, and it turned out the core book was 『(Yukdangbon) Cheongguyeongeon』. However, it has a different form of subject classification from the core book, and thus its lists were compared with those of the anthologies by the subjects from the previous period. As a result, 『Sijoyuchwi』 was not under the influence of those anthologies by the subjects but organized according to Yukdang's way of thinking and early modern sentiment. In future, there should be research efforts to understand his thoughts through the analysis of the works under each item category and to examine the content substance of traditional sijo that he tried to show to people.
