Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the communicative functions and to evaluate the contents of English textbooks in the elementary schools. This study, especially, aims to analyze how communicative functions are well-reflected in textbooks and how the expressions are developed from the 3rd to 6th grades to help students to improve their communicative skills.
The result can be summarized as follows:
This study used the communicative functions which were presented by the 7th national curriculum as the criterion. These communicative functions are divided into seven categories: 'socializing', 'imparting and seeking factual information', 'expressing and finding out intellectual attitudes', 'expressing and finding out emotional attitudes', 'expressing and finding out moral attitudes', 'persuasion and request' and 'problem solving'. Each function consists of several elements
The aimed functions in the 3rd and 6th grades were mostly revealed in the categories of 'socializing', 'imparting and seeking factual information' and, expressing and finding out intellectual attitudes'. The study also shows that most communicative functions for the 6th graders are more deepened and developed in contents than those for the 3rd graders.
In EFL contexts, the significance of English textbooks as the main input is obvious. Thus, the textbook authors should carefully develop curriculum suitable to the students' purpose. And English teachers should plan and design effective teaching strategies according to the students' interest, desire and need and adapt themselves to new teaching circumstances. Therefore, well-designed textbooks enable students to adapt themselves to the any circumstances in which English usage is necessary.
