초기 포스트 모던댄스의 퍼포먼스적 특성연구

Abstract

본 연구는 초기 포스트 모던댄스로 하여금 다양한 안무법의 개발과 춤의 표현 한계를 확장시킬 수 있는 방법론과 가능성을 제시했다는 점에서 긍정적인 영향을 끼쳤던 퍼포먼스의 예술적 특성을 재평가하고, 퍼포먼스적 특성을 도입함으로써 현대예술과 비교해도 전혀 손색이 없는 독창적인 안무법을 개발했던 초기 포스트 모던댄스의 우수성을 재인식하는데 그 목적이 있다. 퍼포먼스는 1909년 2월 20일 이탈리아 미래파의 선언을 시작으로 서로 다른 역사적 배경과 사회적 틀로서 해프닝, 플럭서스, 바디 아트, 퍼포먼스라는 명칭으로 발달해 왔다. 신체의 적극적인 활용과 우연성 및 즉흥성, 그리고 관객 참여적 성격과 총체성을 그 특징으로 삼고 있는 퍼포먼스의 예술적 특성은 미와 추 개념의 혼돈, 일상적 삶과 예술의 혼용, 작위성이 배제된 우연성의 개입과 관객의 적극적인 참여로 특징지울 수 있는 현대예술과 많은 유사성을 내포하고 있다. 오늘날의 퍼포먼스는 많은 미술대학에서 퍼포먼스 과정이 신설되고 주요 국제 아트 센터에 퍼포먼스를 위한 예술 공간이 주어질 정도로 그 위치가 격상되었으며, 현대예술을 대표할 수 있는 가장 강력한 예술매체로 급부상하고 있다. 따라서 본 논문은 이러한 퍼포먼스의 예술적 특성을 근거로 초기 포스트모던댄스가 퍼포먼스적 특성을 도입함으로써 나타나기 시작한 안무상의 변화를 다음과 같이 정의내릴 수 있었다. 첫째, 초기 포스트 모던댄스는 퍼포먼스의 신체적 특성의 영향으로 춤의 본질적 요소인 신체 그 자체로 돌아가기 위한 방법으로써 그 이전의 춤에서 행해졌던 내면 감정의 표현이나 환상적인 의상 및 장치같은 장식적인 기능을 배제했으며, 비 무용수의 기용으로 아름다운 신체와 훈련되고 균형잡힌 신체의 이미지는 꾸밈없는 신체 상태를 취하게 되었으며 무용의 본질인 신체 움직임만을 드러내게 되었다. 또한 발레나 모던댄스에 나타난 정형화된 신체 이미지를 거부하고, 가장 꾸밈없는 상태로서 인간의 나체를 긍정적으로 수용할 수 있도록 만들었다. 이것은 결과적으로 초기 포스트 모던댄스의 무용 어휘를 확장시키고 발레나 모던 댄스가 지향했던 신체의 속박으로부터 인간의 신체를 해방시켰다. 두번째, 퍼포먼스의 비결정성에 의한 우연성 및 즉흥성의 개념은 초기 포스트 모던댄스가 발레나 모던 댄스에 관한 절대적이고 정형화된 관습과 전통을 거부하면서 '모든 움직임이 모두 무용이 될 수 있다' 는 새로운 안무 방법을 제공하였다. 이를 통해서 초기 포스트 모던댄스는 의도적으로 안무된 작품이 아니라 즉흥 속에서 이루어지는 일회적이고 우연적이며 즉흥적인 안무 방법을 지향하게 되었다. 이러한 방법은 하나의 장르로 고착되기 시작한 현대의 무용에 신선한 충격을 전해 주었으며, 각각의 춤은 잘 정해진 시작, 중간, 끝을 갖는 것이 훌륭한 춤 구성이라는 전통적인 원리에서 춤을 해방시켰다. 그 결과, 초기 포스트 모던댄스는 무작위성과 자의성이 실제 삶의 조건이며, 완결된 작업으로서의 생산성 예술을 거부하고 표현성과 의미를 제거하고 일상성을 수용한다는 퍼포먼스적 안무방법에 의해 무용 표현 한계를 극복하고 소재의 다양함을 확대시키는 효과를 가져왔다. 세번째, 초기 포스트 모던댄스는 점차 관객으로부터 멀어지고 있었던 무용이 대중성을 획득하기 위한 방법으로 퍼포먼스의 관객 참여적 성격을 받아들임으로써 비프로시니엄 무대의 추구로 이어지게 되었고, 결국 무용 공연은 화랑이나 다락, 빌딩 꼭대기 등 무대가 아닌 다른 공간으로 확대되어 무대와 관객 사이를 보다 가깝게 만들어 주었고, 서로를 소외시켜왔던 무용수와 관객 사이의 간극을 메워주는 역할을 하게 되었다. 네번째, 초기 포스트 모던댄스는 총체성의 개념을 받아들임으로써 무용, 연극, 영화, 음악, 문학 등이 단순한 조합이 아닌 각자의 독립성과 개성을 유지하면서 하나의 새로운 공연을 창조하게 되었다. 이것은 결과적으로 예술 매체들 사이의 경계를 모호하게 만들었고, 무용의 본질을 회복시키고 예술로서의 무용을 심도있게 탐구할 수 있는 방법을 제공하였다. 이러한 결과를 통해서 초기 포스트 모던댄스는 퍼포먼스의 예술적 특성을 도입함으로써 일반적으로 무용으로 받아들여지는 움직임의 유형에 활기를 불어넣었으며, 안무 방법이나 공연 스타일, 의상, 연행 공간, 그리고 여타 공연 요소들에서 선택의 자유를 증대시켰다. 또한 미적 대상과 일정한 거리를 유지해야만 했던 관객들로 하여금 작품의 소극적 수용자가 아닌 '행위' 의 주체로써, 직접 사물의 조작과 결합을 결정하고, 일상적인 움직임을 행함으로써 가상과 실재의 거리를 좁힐 수 있는 기회를 제공하였다. 비록 초기 포스트 모던댄스의 실험 정신이 실효를 거두지 못했다 할지라도 과거 무용사에서 긍정적인 평가를 얻었던 그들의 실험정신의 우수성을 비판적으로 재평가하는 작업을 통해서 초기 포스트 모던댄스에 나타난 퍼포먼스적 특성을 재도입한다면 좁은 춤 개념의 확장과 일반 대중들의 무용 관람 기회를 더욱 확대시킬 수 있는 계기가 마련될 것이며, 무용이 당대 예술의 주도적 흐름으로써 삶의 의미와 세계관을 전달해 줄 수 있는 매체로 발돋음 할 수 있을 것이다.|There is the aim of this study on authenticating the superior of first Post-Modern dance that has developed the unique dance composition to be shoulder to shoulder with the Modern art by reappraising and inducing the art traits of performance which have given a good effects by proposing the methodology and possibility for the first Post-Modern dance to develop the various dance composition and extend the limit of expression. The performance has been developed by the name of happening, fluxes, body art, performance in the different background and social frame since the declaration of futurist in Italy in February 20th, 1909. The traits of performance participation and the generality. And the art traits of that include much similarity to the Modern art that is characterized by the confusion of concept for beauty and ugliness, mingling the daily life with the art, the interference of accidency without artificiality and the positive participation of spectators. Today's performance has emerged to the strongest art media rapidly as well as been raised so high that the performance courses have been established in many colleges of fine arts and the space for performance has been given in the main international art centers. Therefore, the study can identify the transformation of dance composition since the first Post-Modern dance received the traits of performance as follows. First, the first Post-Modern dance excluded the ornamental function as such of inside feeling expression, fantastic dress and installation in the existed dance and divulged just the natural physical movements without artificiality by using the usual person not a dancer in order to return to the body itself that is a essential element of dance under the influence of the physical traits of performance. Moreover, it refused the formed physical image appeared in the ballet or Modern dance and then made it possible to accept the nudity positively as the condition without artificiality. This resulted in enriching the glossary of first Post-Modern dance and releasing human bodies from the physical bondage to which the ballet or Modern dance have intended. Second, the concept of accidency and impromptu by the characteristics that never determined in advance offered new dance composition as 'whatever movements can be a dance' through the first Post-Modern dance refused the absolute and mixed custom and tradition on the ballet and Modern dance. So, the first Post-Modern dance inclined to the temporary, accidential and impromptu dance composition without artificiality. There methods threw a fresh shock on the Modern dance which have been fixed by a genre and liberated dance from the traditional principle that each dance must be composed with the beginning, the main and the close arranged well. Consequently, the first Post-Modern dance has overwhelmed the limitation of dance expression and enlarged the diversity of materials by the dance composition of performance which eliminate the productive art as the perfected works and accept the daily routine, because non-deliberation and arbitrariness were the practical life condition. Third, the first Post-Modern dance have turned to pursuit non-procinium stages such of galleries, attics and penthouses by accepting the spectator's participation in order to acquire the popularity that dance have been losing eventually, those pursuit made it possible to close not only the stages but also dancers with spectators. Forth, the first Post-Modern dance accepted the concept of generality and then dance, plays, movies, music, literature and etc, can create a new concert with keeping one's independence and individuality. So, the boundary among art media became ambiguous and the method to reestablish the essential gualities of dance and investigate the dance as an art deeply was proposed. Through those results, the first Post-Modern dance blew the animation into the styles of movements recognized by dance usually and enlarged the choices on dance composition, concert style, garments, stage or others. And it gave the chance to lesson the gap between imagination and practicality as well as for spectators to decide the manipulation and consolidation of things directly as an actor not a passive acceptor no longer keeping the gap against the aesthetical object. Even though the experimentalism of first Post-Modern dance didn't success, if we reintroduce the traits of performance appeared in the first Post-Modern dance through reappraising the superiority of their experimentalism that have received the positive appraisement in the dance history, we will get the chance to enlarge the narrow concept on dance and extend the occasion that the masses go to see the dance concert and then the dance will be media to deliver a life meaning and a view of world to people as a main stream of the present art.
