Abstract

The purpose of this study is to inquire the literary charateristics of Jeong Ji-yong, one of the representative poet of 1930s, by dividing his poet life into three parts. It is the literary characteristics of Jeong Ji-yong that he used many novel language by showing new sensibility and sensitivity, not traditional conceptions. He showed outstanding sense and linguistic technique by using co-sensory metaphor : the sense of sight, hearing, touch, smell. This co-sensory metaphor is based on occidental sensitivity. And Ji-yong had temperance and severity of classicism. Novel oriental image which was appeared in his poetic theme reminds reader of a oriental painting and make reader fully enjoy the oriental emotions. Religious poem which appeared in latter part of his poet life showed his Catholicism. Ji-yong made up religious-ego beautiful and devout, so we feel emptiness that religion and life are segregated. This show that he tried to surmount the pathos of lossing country by religion in colonial period. The appearance of Jeong Ji-yong in Korean poetical circles may means the epoch-making achievements of linguistic art and formative beauty, which is done not by emotional poetic language but by animated sensitive language. His outstanding linguistic sensitivity means the self-consciousness about "linguistic art" in the history of Korean morden poem, so we may conder him as a meritious poet who exploited the new aspect of morden poem.
