외국인을 위한 한국 소설 텍스트 등급화 연구

Abstract

본 연구의 목적은 한국 문화에 관심이 있는 외국인 학습자들이 쉽게 읽을 수 있는 흥미로운 읽기 자료, 즉 한국어 Graded reader를 개발하는 데에 있다. 한국 문화가 세계적으로 널리 확산함에 따라 한국어를 의사소통의 도구로 활용하려는 요구뿐만 아니라 한국어 자체를 문화로 인식하고 문화탐색 및 향유의 기회로 한국어로 된 읽을거리를 찾는 수요가 늘고 있기 때문이다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 이제까지의 한국어 학습 분류 체계에 취미나 지적 호기심을 위한 ‘문화향유목적의 한국어’ 영역을 추가하여 일반목적 한국어의 하위 분야로 설정해 보았다. 또한 Graded Reader를 ‘학습자의 수준에 맞춰 어휘와 문법 구조를 통제하고 내용의 간략화나 상세화로 텍스트의 길이를 조정한 읽기 자료’라고 정의하였는데 이는 Graded Reader를 개발하는 방법으로 생략 · 수정의 방식을 취하고자 했기 때문이다. 이 연구에서는 일차적으로 언어로 구조화된 문화로서의 문학 중에서도 서사를 통해 문화를 응축해서 형상화하는 장르인 소설이 ‘문화향유목적의 한국어’를 위한 한국어 Graded Reader의 제재로 적합하다는 판단을 했다. 이런 판단을 바탕으로 현대 한국의 사회상이나 한국인의 가치관을 알 수 있는 작품을 선택, 생략과 수정의 개작 과정을 거쳐 26쪽의 한국어 Graded Reader를 제작하여 사례로 제시하였다. 그동안에는 언어 능력 수준을 고려한다는 이유로 성인 학습자에게 어린 학습자용 자료를 제공하던 것이 관례였다. 이 연구에서는 이런 관례에서 벗어나 현재 한국 사회에서 성인 독서물로 그 성과를 인정받고 있고 여러 번역을 통해 국제적으로도 널리 알려진 신경숙의 장편소설인『엄마를 부탁해』의 일부를 개작의 대상으로 선택하였다. II 장에서는 우선 이미 Graded Reader를 폭넓게 출판하여 확장적 읽기의 다양한 기회를 제공하고 있는 출판사들의 텍스트를 분석하였다. 현재 영어 Graded Reader를 출판하고 있는 주요 출판사들이 모두 선택하여 제작한 18세기 영국 장편소설 Jane Austin의 『Pride and Prejudice』의 영어 Graded Reader 4종과 그 원문을 비교 분석하여 한국어 Graded Reader 개발의 참고자료로 삼고자 하였다. 또한 아직은 시작단계인 한국어 Graded Reader의 현황을 살피고 문제점을 짚어보았다. III 장에서는 문학작품을 개작하여 Graded Reader를 제작하는 과정과 방법을 설정하여 7단계의 순서도를 만들고, 각 단계의 구체적인 내용을 제시하였다. IV 장에서는 III 장에서 설정한 단계에 따른 개작의 실제 사례를 제시하였다. 흥미와 의욕을 지니고 있는 성인 학습자들에게는 언어학습의 낮은 단계에서도 부피감 있는 읽기 자료가 제공되어야 한다는 생각에 중급의 하위단계인 3급 학습자들이 읽을 수 있도록 어휘와 문법을 조절하여 개작하였는데 중급학습자들을 위한 현대 장편소설 개작은 이제까지는 없었던 새로운 시도이다. 또한 개작된 텍스트의 점검을 위해 한국어 교사들을 대상으로 한 설문과 문학 전공자들과의 인터뷰 결과를 덧붙였다. 시작에 불과하지만 본 연구를 통해 한국 현대 장편소설을 바탕으로 한국어 Graded Reader를 개발할 수 있다는 가능성을 확인하였다. 앞으로 좀 더 체계적이고 다양한 연구가 이어져 학습자들의 선택 폭이 넓어질 수 있도록 많은 한국어 Graded Reader가 출판되기를 기대하며, 이 연구에서는 일부를 개작하는 데 그쳤지만 후속 연구를 통해 장편소설 전체를 개작하여 완전한 내용의 Graded Reader를 제작해 보고자 한다. |The purpose of this study is to develop interesting reading materials, namely Korean Graded Readers, that foreign learners interested in Korean culture can easily read. As Korean culture is spreading widely around the world, there are not only the demands to use Korean as a means of communication, but also the needs to find something to read in Korean as an opportunity for cultural exploration recognizing the Korean language itself as a culture. To this end, this study newly added the 'Korean as a cultural exploration tool' area for hobby or intellectual curiosity to the Korean language classification system so far, and set it as a sub-section of the Korean language for general purpose. It also defined Graded Readers as “Reading materials that are in control of vocabulary and grammatical structures to the learner's level and adjusted the length of text to simplify or elaborate content," which is to establish a method of omission and modification as a way of developing Graded Readers. Judging that a culture structured in the language is literature, and that a novel that coheres into sentences with a narrative is suitable as a material of Korean Graded Readers for 'Korean as a Cultural Exploration Tool', this study has produced a 26-page Korean Graded Reader from a novel showing social aspects and values of modern Korea through the process of adaptation by omitting and modifying. Breaking from the convention of providing materials for young learners to grown-up learners on the grounds of considering language skills levels, Shin's novel『Please Look After Mom』, which is now recognized in Korean society and widely known throughout the world, has been chosen as the subject of the adaptation. Chapter 2 analyzed the English Graded Readers, which are already widely published and provide various opportunities for extended reading. The four versions of English Graded Readers of Jane Austin's 18th century novel 『Pride and Prejudice』, which were produced by the major publishers, were compared with the original text of Project Gutenberg for the reference for developing Korean Graded Readers. And looked at the current state of Korean Graded Readers, which is still in its beginning stage, and checked the problem. Chapter 3 set up the process and method of adaptation for Korean Graded Readers described the sequence of seven steps, and Chapter 4 presented the actual practice of adaptation according to those steps. Interested and motivated adult learners should be provided with voluminous reading materials even in the lower stages of language learning, so a Korean novel was revised to allow 3rd level learners to read. The contemporary Korean novel adaptation for middle low-level learners is a new attempt that has never been made. Although it is only the beginning, this study confirmed the possibility of developing a Korean Graded Readers with contemporary Korean novels. In the future, more systematic and diverse research will lead to many Korean Graded Readers being published. This would form the wider range of learners' choices. And it is expected that not only a part, but full-length Korean novels are revised as Graded Readers through further research.
