吳慶錫의 韓中 交流 硏究

Abstract

본 논문은 『中士簡牘帖』에 실린 吳慶錫(1831~1879)과 43명의 청나라 漢人 엘리트들의 20여년에 걸친, 277통 서신을 고찰하였다. 이를 통해 조선말기 걸출한 역관 오경석의 삶을 재조명하는 동시에 아직 많이 알려지지 않은 청나라와 조선 두 나라 사이에서의 그의 탁월한 외교적 역할을 밝혀보았다. 본 논문은 크게 오경석의 청나라 漢人 中士들과의 비정치적인 교류와 정치외교적인 교류 두 가지로 나뉜다. 비정치적인 교류는 친분이 있는 다양한 계층 인사들과의 書畵 ‧ 金石 ‧ 印章 ‧ 人蔘 ‧ 骨董品 등 교류이다. 수 십 여년에 걸친 이러한 비정치적 교류는 일개 역관이었던 오경석이 본연의 직책을 넘어서 외교관의 역할까지 충당할 수 있었던 발판이 된다. 이는 1861년 이후 오경석과 친분이 깊던 많은 漢人들이 청나라의 慈禧太后의 '漢人重用政策'에 의해 새롭게 정치 ‧ 군사의 前面에 나서면서 기인한다. 오경석은 자연스럽게 청나라 정치에 연이 닿게 되고 지인들로부터 고급 정보들을 얻게 되는데, 이러한 고급 정보는 조선의 國益에 도움이 된다. 예컨대, 1866년 프랑스 동양함대가 대포를 끌고 와 조선의 문호를 열려고 호시탐탐 노리고 있을 때 오경석은 예전에 북경에서 교류했던 王軒 ‧ 萬靑藜 등 漢人 중사들로부터 프랑스의 침략시도에 대한 군사정보를 얻게 되며, 이 정보를 빠른 시일 내에 조선에 알려 대원군이 프랑스 침략시도에 맞서는 데 중요한 작용을 했다. 청나라와 조선의 밀접한 정치외교관계를 고려했을 때 비록 비공식적이긴 하지만 오경석의 외교관 역할은 당시 조선의 國益에 커다란 有益을 주었다. 본 논문은 역관 오경석의 朝鮮史에서의 위치와 역할, 그 영향을 재조명하는 데 의의가 있다. 또한 19세기 중엽의 韓 ‧ 中 엘리트들의 문화 ‧ 물질 ‧ 사회 ‧ 정치적 교류의 실태를 밝히며 단면적으로 당시의 청나라와 조선의 정치적 ‧ 군사적 외교관계를 알리는 데도 큰 의의가 있다.| In this thesis on Oh Kyungsuk, an official interpreter of the late Choson Dynasty, I examine Oh's role as a diplomat, which was outstanding but quite unknown to the public. My analysis is based on the 277 letters between Oh Kyungsuk and 43 Chinese scholars in more than twenty years. This thesis is basically composed of two parts: studies on Oh's non-political communication with Chinese people of various social classes, and political communication with influential Chinese scholars and government officials. Non-political communications with Chinese scholars made Oh to become a non-official diplomat. This was possible because Oh's Chinese friends of decades became influential government officials of Qing after 1861, due to the policy of Empress Dowager Cixi to give non-Manchurian Chinese important positions. Through his friends, Oh became to get high quality information, which benefit the national interest of Choson. Considering the unique relations of Choson and Qing throughout history but particularly in Oh's period, Oh's role as a diplomat was huge. This thesis adds new dimension to the exiting scholarship on Oh Kyungsuk by revealing his unknown role as a diplomat. This thesis advances the studies of Korean history of the late 19 century, by revealing the cultural, material and socio-political communications between Chinese and Korean scholars in the mid and late 19 century, and also by showing the political, military and diplomatic relations between Choson and Qing.
