Abstract
This study is purposed to examine the feature and significance in the history of literature of the work, The Bride without Hands
In the first part, I go over some established studies and mentioned the object of the study.
During the second part, I define the position of the work, The Bride without Hands, in step-mother tale and narrowed orderly epic-structure into eight segments, focusing five recorded works in Korea. Furthermore, I indicate segmental mutative aspect.
In the third part, I observe the development of the case in the story and examine the meaning structure in The Bride without Hands. I also show the discord on social movement.
In the next part, I reveal the significance of The Bride without Hands by analyzing stepmother tales, which handle the matter of discord between a stepmother and a daughter from a former wife, and also observe international position and peculiarity.
In the last part, based on the study, I define the value of The Bride without Hands in the history of literature.
To sum up, The Bride without Hands is the structure of expulsion; return, separation; reunion, and lack; adequacy itself, show social custom in entering, and contain the independence from parents and complete combination of a couple. However, it has differentiation that it contains very special motive which is cutting and regeneration of hands, throwing out from the husbands home in second time, and the husbands inspecting of his wife, which can not be found from the other step-mother tales. In addition, The Bride without Hands was translated by Kim, Sung-Do in 1924, but it has never been proved those two were related because the Korean tale, the Bride without Hands, was initially recorded in 1924, and three more related works were found between 1937 and 1938. The structure of those two are strikingly similar, but several distinctions, which is the role of a villain, the cause of cutting and regeneration of hands punishment of the villain were found, and the detailed distinctions can be seen in the story. Indeed, The Bride without Hands is Korean original tale, which contains Korean tradition.
