Abstract

This thesis was written to introduce a study about features or characters of novels by drawing Korea treaditional Sasang- Constitutional Medicine. It is Psychiatry and also Clinical Medicine which sort people as four Kinds - TaeYangIn, TaEumIn, SoYangIn, SoEumIn - according to the constitutional style. I suggest this medicine as character type and analyze it as focusing on novels of Son Chang Sub, a famous writer in the middle of 1950s, the reason of my drawing this traditional medicine in this thesis is that characters, constitutional analysis was possible and as the result function and role analysis of characters was clarified. First, according to the analysis result of God's Joyful work which is writer's autobiographic novel, the hero S-writer Son Chang-Sub is SoyangIn's constitutional style. And next, in Holiday the hero Doil is SoEumIn and it is opposite with writer's constitutional character. The reactionery persons - KumSun, Ami and DoSuk - all are TaEumIn. They are also opposite with the writers own. WonGu in The Rainy Day is also SoEumIn, the reactionery person DongWuk and DongWok have above four kinds of constitutional characters. But the character structure of this novel says one thing. That is YangIn style assault YumIn style one-sidedly, this confrontation structure is composed of a main stream of his novels. When I analyzed the main characters in Mr. Son Chang-Sub's novels, I found that a interesting thing. It is that all the main heroes are SoYumIn. Namely, DalSu in A Writing in blood, ByungJun in A Victim, JiSang in Non-resolved chapter, GuNamYoung in A boy etc. are all SoYumIm. This setting is a main pattern of Son Chang-Sud's novels and this is especially noticeable because SoEumIn is opposite to constitutional style of writer. We couldn't also help paying attention that heroes are EumIn style(one-sided victims) and reactionery persons are YangIn style (one-sided assaulter) in his novels. After 1957, above character styles were changed. For example, the main character SeoManKi in A surplus man is TaeYumIn and reactionery persons are composed of various style-SoYangIn, SoEumIn, TaeYangIn etc. Especially, the hero JongBae in The Will of Bubble is SoYangIn and this hero style was shown first in his novels so far. And this style is accorded with writer's constitutional character. In 1961, writer published his autobiography novel, God's joyful work. Of course the hero, namely Son Chang-Sub is SoYangIn in that novel and has same constitutional style with the hero of The Will of Bubble. As we know above stream. The courses is for writing his autobiography novel God's joyful work and finally it means all imperfect travel for human finding himself by using the expression of Georg Lucacs's The Theory of Novel. Writer said that 'I' is 'A orphan of Body and Mind' and 'others' are 'Enemy with selfishness and hypocrisy' in our actual life. And he mentioned his novels as 'Human Being's Defiance against existing society and existing authority'. Namely,'I=Orphan' and 'Others=Enemy', it means that I have to resist others and the characters in his novels is targets for revenge and fight. So writer set a hero who is opposite character style with his own and the hero was damaged one-sidedly. This kind of imperfect travel results from the writer's constitutional character That is his SoYangYn style includes an imperfect Greed- give up the wisdom and cheat other persons, in conclusion, writer's imperfect travel is resulted from this. Writer express this as 'tragic humor' or 'tragic nonsense.' Son Chang-Sub's novels can success as accomplishing the accordance between his constitutional character, Greed and his discussion ability. Here we know the reason of his novels' success.
