민화와 팝아트의 유사성을 통한 상징성 표현 연구

Abstract

현대는 대중문화의 시대이다. 대중문화란 대중이 형성하는 문화를 말하 며 대량생산, 대량소비를 전제로 하고 있다. 우리의 전통 문화인 민화 또한 민중의 생활과 밀접한 관계가 있으며 ‘대중예술’이란 의미로서 우리 조상들의 삶의 형태와 밀접한 연관을 맺고 있다. 민화에는 인간의 보편적인 욕망을 담 고 있는 상징성과 생활필수품으로서의 장식성, 익살스러운 해학성, 조상들의 지혜로운 정신이 깃들어져 있다. 또한 민화에는 인간이 상상하는 자유로운 세 상이 펼쳐져 있으며, 행복을 염원하는 길상의 상징들로 가득하다. 이는 우리 의 전통문화이자 현대문화에서 요구되는 특징이기도 하다. 팝아트 역시 민화에서 보여 지는 특성과 매우 유사하다. 팝아트는 일상 이 미지나 대중매체를 소재로 사용하여 고급예술을 대중예술로 만들었으며 해학 과 상징의 방법으로 대중과의 소통을 시도하여 미술영역을 확장 시켰다. 본 연구는 행복 추구라는 인간의 염원을 현대의 대중문화인 팝아트와 조 선시대 대중예술인 민화의 유사성을 이용하여 표현한 작품논문이다. 슈퍼히어로인 원더우먼 캐릭터를 페르소나로 삼아 비현실적 세상에 당당하고 확고한 자아실현의 의지를 상징적으로 표현하였다. 일상의 삶과 경험에서 유추할 수 있는 미래를 그림 속에 공유하며 대중과의 공감대를 형성하고자하였다. 본 연구의 내용은 다음과 같다. 제 1장에서는 민화와 팝아트의 유사성에 관한 연구를 하게 된 배경과 목적, 방법을 개관하였고 제 2장에서는 조선시대 민화의 정의 및 특성을 통해 민화 의 배경과 표현방법을 조사하였다. 제 3장에서는 팝아트의 발생 배경과 특성 을 살펴보고 대중예술로서 팝아트의 표현에 관하여 조사하였다. 제 4장에서는 민화와 팝아트의 유사성을 살펴보고 민화를 현대적으로 재해석한 작가의 작 품을 앞에서 연구되어진 유사성을 통하여 비교, 분석하였다. 제 5장에서는 위 의 연구를 바탕으로 민화와 팝아트의 유사 특징을 본인 작품에 적용하였으며 이를 통해 새로운 예술적 분야의 가능성을 검증하고자 하였다. 연구결과 민화와 팝아트의 비교분석을 통해서 유사성이 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 민화는 동물을 의인화하여 양반들의 삶을 해학적으로 풍자하였고 팝아트에서도 대중이미지를 해학과 풍자를 통해 표현한 해학성이란 유사성이 있다. 또한 문양과 문자를 이용하거나 기호를 통한 상징성, 실생활의 장식용 품으로써 사용되는 실용성, 일상 이미지의 사용을 통한 대중성이란 성격의 유 사성이 있는 것을 알 수 있었다. 팝아트를 통해 살펴 본 민화는 독특한 예술 로서 이미 현대적인 측면을 갖추고 있었으며 시대를 앞서간 자유분방한 표현 속에 특별한 풍미가 깃들여져 있음을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구는 “행복한 일탈여행”이라는 주제로 시작되었다. 여행이라는 공간 속에서 민화의 미적가치를 발견하게 되었고, 민화 속 풍부한 이상세계에서 대 중의 보편적 욕망이 담겨 있는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 민화의 특성과 민 화와 팝아트의 유사성을 본인 작품에 적용시켜보았다. 본 연구를 통해 민화를 이해하는데 도움이 되길 바라며 많은 관심 속에 유사한 연구가 꾸준히 지속되어지길 바란다. |The modern is the era of popular culture. Popular culture refers to the culture formed by the masses and is premised on mass production and mass consumption. Our traditional culture, folk painting, is also closely related to people's lives, and in the sense of “popular art,” it is closely related to the life style of our ancestors. In folk paintings, there are symbolisms that contain human universal desires, decorativeness as a necessity, humorous humorousness, and the wise spirit of ancestors. In the folktale, there is a free world imagined by humans, and full of symbols on the road that wish for happiness. This is our traditional and modern culture Pop art is also very similar to the traits seen in folk paintings. Pop Art made high-grade art into popular art using daily images and mass media, and expanded the art area by attempting to communicate with the public by means of humor and symbolism. This study is a work paper that expresses the human desire to pursue happiness using the similarity between pop art, which is a modern popular culture, and folk painting, which is a popular art of the Joseon Dynasty. The superhero Wonder Woman character was used as a persona to symbolize the willingness of self-realization in the unreal world. We wanted to form a consensus with the public by sharing in the picture the future that can be inferred from everyday life and experiences. The contents of this study are as follows. In the first chapter, the background, purpose and method of researching the similarity between folk painting and pop art were reviewed. In the second chapter, the background and expression method of folk painting were examined through the definition and characteristics of folk painting of Joseon Dynasty. In Chapter 3, the background and characteristics of pop art were examined and the expression of pop art as popular art was examined. In Chapter 4, the similarity between folk painting and pop art was examined, and the works of artists who reinterpreted folk painting through modern similarities were analyzed and analyzed. In Chapter 5, I applied similar characteristics of folk painting and pop art to my work based on the above research and tried to verify the possibility of new artistic field through this As a result of the research, it was found that there is similarity through comparative analysis of folk painting and pop art. Minhwa humorously embodies the lives of yangban by anthropomorphizing animals. In popart, there is a similarity to humorousness in which mass images are expressed through humor and satire. In addition, it was found that there is a similarity between personality using patterns and letters, symbolism through symbols, practicality used as a decorative item in real life, and popularity through the use of everyday images. The folk paintings examined through pop art are unique arts, which already have a modern aspect, and have a special flavor in the free spirited expression that preceded the times. This study began with the theme of "Happy Deviance." In the space of travel, the aesthetic value of folk paintings was found, and the universal desires of the public were found in the rich ideal world in folk paintings. I tried to apply the characteristics of folk painting and the similarity between folk painting and pop art to my work. It is hoped that this study will help us to understand folk paintings and that similar research will be continued with much interest.
