- Abstract
- The purpose of this research is to provide basic social readjustment support data by surveying 161 female prostitutes working in the red-light district (a.k.a. Glass Rooms) near the Jungdong, Sungnam area in Kyunggi Province. The results are as follows:
Despite the prejudice, criticism, and serious human rights violations, the reason why these women cannot breakaway from it is because there is no real alternative. The motive of prostitution was for earning money and despite their age, they wanted to be self-employed rather than married.
Of those surveyed, most settled in their current occupation by roaming about from one shop to another after running away from home, and are unwilling nor hoping to change their occupation. The primary factor for this structural problem is that these women did not go through proper education nor socialization, and with the prostitution market environment using them branding them as prostitutes and has left them no choice.
Therefore, before considering measures to support the social readjustment of female prostitutes, there needs to be strong national legal support to provide accurate fact-finding investigation and on-site medical, legal counseling.
