- Abstract
- The elderly in the future will be different from today's elderly in various aspects. Recently, as people's average life span expands and the old population increases rapidly, the elderly's problems become a serious social issue.
With such basic conceptions in mind, this study was aimed at surveying elderly's needs for the social welfare service programs of the elderly's general welfare centers, and thereupon, suggesting the ways to improve the programs in order to help the elderly as psychological and social beings live a valuable life.
To this end, relevant literature was reviewed, and thereupon, a questionnaire survey was conducted.
This study consists of the following chapters;
The first chapter introduces purpose, scope and methods of the study.
The second chapter reviews relevant literature and preceding studies in order to examine the concept of the elderly and their welfare needs theoretically.
The third chapter discusses the methods and procedures of study and thereupon, analyzes the demographic vanables of the elderly using the general welfare centers.
The fourth chapter analyzes the results of the survey to identify elderly's welfare needs.
The fifth chapter suggest the reform measures for operation of the welfare centers based on the results of the survey.
The sixth chapter concludes the study.
For this study, the elderly aged 60 or older who were using Ilsan Elderly's General Welfare Center in Goyang-si, Kyonggi-do were sampled. The collected data were processed using VAX6610 SPSS program for frequency analysis for tendencies and cross-tab analysis for correlation among variables.
Based on the above findings, the following reform measures have been suggested;
1. In order to improve the facilities, spaces need to be used efficiently with the building expanded, and city and shuttle bus lines should be increased.
2. The reform measures for center's programs are 'survey of program needs and efficiency', 'designing of the programs meeting elderly's needs', 'recruitment of lecturers and continued operation of the programs', 'recruitment of professional program operators', 'development of the programs suitable to community needs', 'publicization of special programs and enhancement of inter-program linkage', 'reinforcement of healthcare programs', etc.
3. In order to improve operators' service attitudes, professional manpower should be fostered, while center mangers' and operators' professionalism should be enhanced. In addition, the government is requested to increase the support to the center, while relevant organizations should be established. It should not be overlooked that the elderly users were more or less satisfied with the general welfare center services except operators' service attitude.
Lastly, it is hoped that the results of this study will be useful to operation of the elderly's general welfare centers and their programs, as the welfare centers become more and more important and their number increases.
