한국 화장문화의 연대기적 변천 특성에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 개화기이후 한국 화장문화의 변천을 연구하기 위하여 상고 시대와 고려시대, 조선시대의 화장문화를 간략히 살펴보고 개화기 이후를 중심으로 1990년대까지의 화장문화를 살펴본다. 화장문화를 화장품의 개발과 대중매체의 역할, 여성 의식이 어떻게 변모하는가를 연대기적으로 그 특징을 고찰하는 것이 이 논문의 의의라고 할 수 있다. 화장의 시작은 상고시대부터 그 기원을 살핀다. 상고시대에 사용한 쑥과 마늘은 피부미용에 대한 관심으로 볼 수 있고, 삼국시대의 고분벽화에 그려진 여성의 화장에서 진하고 굵은 눈썹, 작은 입술을 발견 할 수 있다. 백제의 화장품이 일본에 전해질만큼 화장품 제조기술도 상당히 발전한 것으로 알 수 있다. 또한 신라시대의 유물 중에 다양한 화장용구와 백분을 사용한 흔적으로 통해서 상고시대보다 진보된 화장문화를 추정할 수 있으며 당나라와의 활발한 교역을 통해 더욱 화려해진 화장의 경향을 추정할 수 있다. 이러한 화장은 고려시대로 넘어 오면서 기녀들을 중심으로 분대화장이 등장한다. 몽고의 영향을 받아 더 화려해진 분대화장은 분을 많이 바르고 눈썹을 가늘게 가다듬었으며 붉은 입술과 붉은 연지를 사용하여 상당히 화려한 화장이 되었지만 기녀들의 화장이어서 당시 일반인들에게는 부정적으로 인식되어 왔다. 이러한 부정적인 인식은 조선시대를 거처 개화기에 이르기까지 이어져 한국의 화장 문화 발전의 저해 요소가 원인 중에 하나가 된다. 조선시대는 고려시대보다 진보하지 않았고 유교적인 여성관을 확고하게 정립하고 있었기에 화장도 신분계층에 따라 다르게 전개된다. 따라서 화려한 화장은 일반인에게 널리 퍼지지 않았으며, 기녀들의 화장과 이분화된 경향을 보여준다. 그러나 개화기와 일제 강점기에 이르러 한국의 화장은 커다란 변화를 겪는다. 개항과 더불어 외래의 문화가 유입되면서 화장품이 수입되고 국내에서도 박가분을 비롯한 화장품을 개발하고 화장품의 유통도 신문이나 잡지를 통해 일반인들이 쉽게 접할 수 있게 된다. 일본을 통해 들어온 수입화장품과 국내에서 개발한 화장품은 방물장수나 매분구, 일반 상점에서 화장품을 살 수 있게 되어 화장문화의 새로운 형태를 보여준다. 또한 일제 강점기이지만 교육받은 여성과 사회참여를 활발히 하는 신여성의 등장도 화장문화에 새로운 변화를 갖게 되는데 일조를 한다. 전통적인 화장문화가 현대의 화장문화 형태로 이른 것은 개화기 이후부터라고 볼 수 있으며 해방 이후 서구의 문명이 급격히 밀려와 화장품 사용의 빈도수는 점차 증가하는 경향을 보인다. 특히 미국식 문화가 국내에 유입되면서 PX를 통한 수입화장품이 증가하고 국내 화장품의 개발에도 많은 변화가 일어난다. 또한 여성잡지가 창간되고 영화가 대중화되면서 화장에 대한 인식이 점차 달라진다. 이들 여성잡지에서 유행되는 화장이나 화장기법을 소개하는 내용이 일반대중에게 전달됨으로써 화장에 대한 대중화의 기초를 마련하게 된다. 이렇게 전개됨으로써 전통적으로 화장은 화류계의 여성들만이 하는 것으로 알고 있던 인식도에서 여성의 미의식과 표현의식으로 전환되기 시작한다. 기초화장품 위주로 소비되던 것이 아이라이너, 마스카라, 빨간 입술 등 눈화장과 입술화장에 치중하는 화장법이 유행하게 된다. 1960년대는 급속한 산업화에 부응하여 경제가 활발히 전개되고 화장품업계에서도 다양한 화장품을 개발하는 시기에 이른다. 자외선을 차단하는 선크림과 피부 손질에 필요한 기초화장품 개발이 더욱 활발히 전개되기에 이른다. 이러한 경향은 1970년대로 이어지고 색조화장이 일반 대중에게 퍼져 보다 다양한 형태로 발전하게 된다. 색채에 있어서도 다양한 색깔이 유행하고 계절에 따른 화장법, 모임의 성격에 따라 달리 하는 화장법 등 주제를 갖고 화장하는 경향이 보인다. 1980년대의 화장의 특징은 1970년대 보다 색깔에 있어 더욱 다양하고 화려하게 나타나는 경향이 있다. 86년 아시안 게임과 88년 올림픽 게임을 개최하여 국제적인 감각에 맞는 화장법으로 다양하게 전개된다. 또한 화장품 제조에서도 화장품의 원료와 화장품의 질에 따른 품질의 다양화를 추구하면서 고급화를 지향하는 화장품이 개발되는 특징을 지닌다. 이는 1990년으로 넘어가면서 그 경향은 더욱 짙어진다. 화장품에 대한 인식이 기초화장을 통한 피부손질의 차원을 넘어 개인별 피부형태에 따라 맞춤의 화장품으로 고급화되고 기능성을 강조한 화장품으로 보다 전문화, 세분화된 경향으로 변모한 연대기적 특징을 살필 수 있다. 이렇게 연대적으로 화장문화가 변모를 겪는 요인을 살펴보면 개화기 이후 여성들의 교육중대와 사회활동 참여도 기존에 가지고 있었던 화장문화에 대한 인식이 달라졌고, 대중매체의 역할과 광고로 화장품 소비 형태와 화장품의 질을 향상시킨 것을 알 수 있다. 이것은 경제부흥과 여성들의 사회활동이 시대적으로 늘어나면서 화장의 필요성을 느낀 것과 신문, 잡지, 광고를 통한 대중문화의 전파에서 그 원인을 찾을 수 있다. 또한 국내 화장품업계에서 신제품 개발에 대한 꾸준한 투자로 화장품의 과학화와 전문화를 추구한 결과로 화장문화가 변천되었음을 파악할 수 있다.|To study the changes of Korean cosmetic culture since the enlightened age of Korea, this article briefly reviews the cosmetic culture of ancient, Korea dynasty, and Chosun dynasty, and address the cosmetic culture from enlightened age to 1990's. The purpose of this article is to chronologically investigate the characteristics of development of cosmetic products, the role of mass media, and the mentality of women. Cosmetic has originated from the ancient age. Through investigating the artemisia and garlic which has been used in ancient age, we are able to see the interest about the skin care of that age, and we can discover strong and thick eyebrows, small lips from the women cosmetics drawn in the wall painting of the period of three kingdoms. From the fact that the cosmetic product of Baekje dynasty was delivered to Japan, we can also get to know that cosmetic product manufacturing technology of that age had been well developed. In addition, from investigating the various cosmetic tools and face powder which was used in the Shilla dynasty, we can suppose the advanced cosmetic culture, and the trend of cosmetic which was becoming more brighter through the activating trade with the Tang age. In Korea dynasty, Bundae cosmetic had appeared which is used usually by the kisaeng. Bundae cosmetic has become more brilliant through influence of Mongolian, and it had various characteristics such as plastering more with powder, arranging the eyebrows thinly, using the red lips and rouge. But Bundae cosmetic has been regarded negatively since it was that of kisaeng. This negative feeling continues from Chosun dynasty to enlightened age, so it has become the one of barriers to the development of Korean cosmetic culture. The culture of cosmetic in Chosun dynasty was developed differently by social position because that compared with Korea dynasty, Chosun did not progress, and established the Confucian view of life firmly. Therefore, brilliant cosmetic was not spreaded through public, and public cosmetic has shown the different trend comparing with the cosmetic of kisaeng. However, Korean cosmetic has experienced the big transformation in the enlightened age and under the rule of Japanese imperialism. With opening the port, foreign culture entered and then foreign cosmetic products were imported. In addition, Korean cosmetic product including Bak-ga powder is developed, and moreover through newspaper and magazines, for the public it has become easier to get the cosmetic product. The fact that public can get imported cosmetic goods from Japan and those which is made in Korea from the peddler of women's items, visiting seller, general cosmetic shop shows the new form of cosmetic culture in Korea. And cosmetic culture of Korea has experienced the new transformation also through entering of educated women and social participating of those women. Since the Reformation age, traditional cosmetic culture has changed into the form of modern cosmetic culture. The frequency of using the cosmetic products has increased gradually since that a lot of western civilization entered into Korea after the emancipation from Japan. Especially, with American culture entering into Korea, the number of imported cosmetic goods have increased through PX, and then there has been a lot of changes in the development of Korea cosmetic products. Moreover, with magazines for women publishing and popularization of cinema, the recognition about the cosmetic has changed gradually. The contents of these women magazines, for example recent fad of cosmetic or technique of cosmetic is delivered to the public, and this process is placing the basis for popularization of cosmetic. Because of these trend, the negative feeling about the cosmetic has changed into positive perception, that is cosmetic has become regraded as a sense of women's beauty, a pursuit of women's expression. The consumer pattern of cosmetic has changed from basic cosmetic products into the products which emphasize the eye cosmetic, lip cosmetic such as eyeliner, mascara, and red lips. In 1960's, cosmetic companies developed various cosmetic products with quickly developing economy. Therefore, cosmetic product companies were developing the sun cream and basic cosmetic products for skin care. In 1970's, these trend continues and a shade makeup was well dispersed into public and improved to various form. Various color comes into fashion, also thematic cosmetic techniques such as a seasonal cosmetic technique, cosmetic technique for individual meeting has been into fashion. In 1980's, the color of cosmetic was more various and brighter than 1970's. Especially, through Asian games and Olympic games, cosmetic technique with international sense was developed. And in manufacturing of the cosmetic products, a luxurious cosmetic products was developed with pursuing for various raw material and quality. In 1990's, these trend was intensified. The cognition about cosmetic goods has changed from simple skin care into customized cosmetic or skin care goods, and therefore the market of cosmetic goods is well specialized and segmented into emphasizing the function. In conclusion, we come to know that the expansion of education for women during the enlightened ages, and social participations of them have played an important role for changing the cognition of cosmetic and besides, mass media and commercial advertisements have improved the quality of cosmetic goods. The cause of these trend is that it was necessary for women to make up with increasing participation of women in the society and economic revival, and additional cause of these trend is the dissemination of mass culture via newspaper, magazines, and commercial advertisements. In addition, we can see that our domestic company has invested on the new product development for pursuing the scientific cosmetic and specialization of cosmetic goods to change the culture of cosmetic in Korea.
